Maaco Paint Job [Merged 2-7]

i requested them.. good isht on the fast turnaround.. u indeed have proved that the MAACO paint job aint that bad.. how much did u pay all together again and wat was done? and the pics taken.. is the car clean and all waxed? good job it looks good for a MAACO..

I let MAACO do all the prep work...which is the only thing that concerns me...prep work is one of the main things that determines how long the paint lasts.

The 3rd picture from the top shows the side that had a dent the size of a grapefruit right past the driverside corner light. They did a excellent job on that too.

Its not even waxed yet, I'm supposed to wait at least 4 to 6 weeks, I am choosing to wait 6 weeks and try to keep it out of the weather hazards as much as possible by either putting it in the garage or using a car cover.

The package I choose at maaco was:
ValvePrep (Prep Package) $100
Supreme (Paint Package) $400
Full Clearcoat $225
Gravel Guard $125

Extra Charges included:
Door Jams $100
Color Change $30
Dent Removal $30

All in all it was $1050 with tax. I felt it was well worth the money, only time will tell though in terms on how well it lasts.

I think it needs more clear or its not smooth or something
my OEM 8yr paint shines and reflects more than that

I think it may shine better once it's waxed

Try taking pictures when there is more light. Looks like you took them around sunset... not enough light. All of the images look under exposed and makes the paint look dull. Try taking them during mid-day on a sunny day or partially clear day. Regular point and shoot cameras don't give you any exposure controls so lighting is absolutely crucial for proper exposure.

If want to do artsy shots with a good camera w/exposure controls, rule of thumb is one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset. Cheap camera, always shoot when there is most light available. Shoot with the light behind you unless you want a silhouette shot which are usually boring unless done right.

if you have someonw wetsand and buff it, it will shine alot more and be smoother than oem. if they do it right, but it also depends on how many coats of clear they put on it.(at least 3)

I'd say the best thing on the car is the paint job... now you know your cars worth at least 1200$ not knocking but the front bumper needs to go or either the rest of the kit needs to come? but if thats your thing all for you.

Is MAACO the only paint shop that does paint for a relatively low cost?

My parents are tossing around the idea of painting my car (the paint is really faded and cracked in places), and would be willing to put around $400-$700 for a decent job.

So, if I decide to take them up on this, I'd like to know the best place to go. I know you get what you pay for, and my friend who used to own a 95 GST had his car, previously dim green, painted electric blue at MAACO and it turned out really nicely. You could only see a few imperfections if you got on close inspection.

However, others I've talked with have said MAACO's a joke, and wouldn't be worth my money. I don't want to blow my folks money, especially since we're rather tight on it right now.

Any ideas?

you have 2 choices:

1. Pay MAACO $300 to get it redone every 2-3 years

2. Pay a real body shop $1000 once for life.

(assuming you are painting it the same color and arent going to do door jams etc...)

there is a reason MAACO is so cheap and its called sanding and primer coat.

yeah 1K is a bit low for a quality job. The quality of the paintjob does not totally lie in the paint and the application of the paint (painter) as many people believe, the quality of the job, rather, depends mostly on the prep work that goes into the car. Compare paint work and the formentioned primer and sanding job to a foundation of a house, you can have a 10 million dollar home but if you skimp out on the foundation it will all come crashing down, the effects of the ill preparation may not be apparant at first but they will be noticable later. A quality paint job consists of three things, prep work, painting, finishing. Painting the car itself does not take very long, 10 minutes per coat 15 minute dry time (dry time starts as soon as you being applying the paint), 7 coats ( primer, 3 base, 3 clear). Yet when I painted my car, (outside only, did all of the jamming before hand), I ended up clocking a 10 hour day. (This is with the car already wetsanded). That 10 hours did not include the finishing time. Granted I understand that not many people want a show quality paint job, but do you really want to have to fix it every so many years? It's like buying a qulaity tool, it is expensive but it lasts forever, buy a cheap tool and you will inevidably replace it numerous times. Obviously you will not be considering a $3k paint job for your car, that is more than understandable, but I would take it to a reputable collison shop before I would pay $300 for Maaco. Just my $0.02 Granted I know there are people who will swear by their maaco job, it is at best a gamble, you can come out on top or you can get screwed, personally my paint is not something I am willing to chance.
