$50 Paint Job [merged]

It'll be real cool to see how it turns out with the blue flake over the pearl but heres a thought.

When I got some silver pearl to do the Spyder,I was told you really can't sand it until you clearcoat it because of the depth needed to achieve the pearl effect.Also,when sanding down the stock Minden Silver Pearl on the Spyder,once you got through the clearcoat it would dull to a flat gray pretty quick.

Someone more experienced with pearl paint could maybe help here,I'd hate to have done something wrong with my paint and then tell you you can't do this or that when it was only my personal screw up,haha.

I think you're on the right track with testing it first on the beater truck.

I used #7779 Rustoleum Gloss Black,about 6-7 cans because I plan to use the roller method as well but was short on time for the SE Regional DSM meet in Jax. FL.This way its the same paint and the car was a solid color for the meet.Heres some before shots of the car....

I have all the supplies for the job except a sheltered place to paint,I even got the buffing bonnet for the high speed polisher last weekend and just need the polishing compound...luckily thats cheap!

That was one spraycoat nothing done to it. Also I hate to tell you guys this but I bought a harbor freight paint gun and the factory ceyanne red pearl and clear for the car. If Im selling it I will have to have an automoive finish on there.

I will however be painting my dads corolla soon with this method, do Ill pick up posting where I left off.

I f***ed up my front bumper this winter when I hit some black ice. I'll have to test this out on the it once I get a new one. I'd like to get some sort of a bold blue color with a light flake, but I won't have the money for a professional paint job for years.

If I can get a shine like that....

P.S. What does it look like up close? Any orange peel or other troubles?

Guys I know this is a 50 dollar thread but I just wanted to post pics on my first "professional paint job" results Heres my cost list for this...

Compressor 15Gal 1.5-3Hp---------- 100 but Already Had it for air tools.
Paint and all additives from NAPA--- 290
Harbor freight paint gun-------------- 20
Total is -------------------------------- 410

I spent a total of probably 180 on the rustoleum stuff with rollers, then sand paper and the mineral spirits and then I bought the wagner to shoot it.

As for results....Im sorry to say there is no comparison. The automotive paint just coats better and has better results.

This is NAPA corssfire paint by the way. If anyone thinks they want to attemp this I can give everything I learned information wise to whoever wants it, I know it will be helpfull.

I have to re-clear the rest of the car du to being an amature and not putting enough on the first time, but the bumper and spoiler below came out just as I would want them to after learning the correct way to do it!

Yea I went the normal way in the end...I had the option and took it. Im still learning to shoot, but from where I was till now in this short week...100% better I learned to tune my gun, different spray methods how to lay the coats on. Stuff like that.

The house paint would have been great but I could not get a shine back after wetsanding and buffing to I decided to spray with the wagner...it was good but I could not get all the dust specs out and since I could not wetsand that was a problem for me. Id say 300 bucks for a nice looking paint job isnt to bad at all.

A tip is to youtube HVLP plraying and gun tuning, how and what you want your spray pattern to look like. Check out all those trials I did behind the spoiler in the pics...each spray I made small adjustments untill I got the gun shooting perfectly.

I'd advise against that. Not to be cocky, but I'm pretty good with a spray can and I have trouble with getting clear right. Besides, they said it's easier to make repairs to the paint without the clear.

I have never once had a good result with spraycan clear...I have no idea why it always comes out whitelooking when I spray it and it never lays good.

I don't know if you've done this, but it'd be great if you started a new thread for the "normal" spray method, along with the tips you've learned. I know there's plenty on the web, but it's different seeing some DIY'er learn for the first time; it gives me perspective if I were to attempt it. I'd say post it here, but this is the $50 thread and it really does deserve it's own. It'd be great to get a comparison of your thoughts on the roller method vs. amateur spray method. Easy enough to learn? Recommended? Did you paint in your garage, and did you get overspray everywhere and did the smell bother the neighbors? Inquiring minds want to know!

BTW, the red spray shots look great. Any daytime/closeup shots?

Looks pretty good for a spray noob such as myself and you.I have a question on your buffing though and why you couldn't get it to a mirror shine.....

Did you get an actuall high speed polisher and a buffing bonnet or doid you have an orbital buffer from say wal-mart for $40?

That looks good enough and strays from the $50 method a good bit....I'd start my own '$400 paint job"thread.

Hey I used a cheap polisher and my expensive buffer neither did a thing for the rustoleum.

ABout the light...your tellin me I cant see shit in there when Im painting its annoying to say the least.

I have wet sanded to 2000 and buffed with 3m rubbing compound with a wool pad and then preteige 1500 and a black foam pad heres where Im at.

here's my results with the $50 paint job...the roll on method sucked for me...and if u paint the car in a gloss color its hard to get a good shine...

but i went Semi gloss black...and it actually turned out pretty good...i used a Wagner Electric Gun, and a 50/50 acetone to paint mix
