1G LSD options for my 1g fwd?

Hi y'all, have a quick question for whomever. So I'm one of the tractionally challenged, wrong wheel drive guys. With my 91 talon tsi fwd. Now I'm finally making some decent power, probably 300w. But the torque steer is now unbearable and quite dangerous. I'm ready to break the bank and find an lsd for my car. I've been keeping an eye out for several years, and already know it's slim pickings for a 1GA fwd. I'm aware a guy can swap over to a 2g, with an axle swap. Have 2 questions. Are there any options for a direct replacement still? And if I need to go with a 2g diff, what hurdles am I looking at? Last thing I want is to spend that kind of $, just to find out it's a no go. Any advice would greatly appreciated?.

You might also want to look at the possibility of the equal length mod for the FWD.

It's not slim pickings, it is simply an AWD DSM 25 spline LSD and then use the proper tapered roller bearings and speedometer gear installed. Quaife QDH8B or KAAZ DBM2010SQ are the main ones I sell for a 1G FWD 25-spline application. 2G FWD application would be a Quaife QDH7B 27-spline diff. AWD transmissions would use Quaife QDH8B or KAAZ DBM2010SQ.

As for axles, running equal length AWD axle and halfshaft works nice, but if you are having problems finding a halfshaft, then just run your FWD front axles.

Thanks for input guys. That kind of clears things up. I really wasn't sure about the AWD diffs working in a fwd.

I actually already have done the equal length axle mod a few years ago. Seems like it marginally helped.

Things that will help with torque steer, first off, poly front and rear motor mount bushings and front lower control arm bushings.

I actually have a set of Energy Suspension 1G lower control arm bushings at my place, new in box. I ordered them for my Chariot but they were different and I was able to source specific ones to fit the Chariot and had these left over.

I would also check what your alignment is currently at. As for 1g FWD specific values I do not have those for alignment numbers to try. Your tire selection will also matter, as well as tire pressures.

Regarding the Quaife LSD differential and KAAZ clutch type LSD differential, I will have them all back in stock in around 2 weeks. I have a manufacturing order in place for another 100 speedometer gears, and will resume stocking the differentials once the speedo gears are back on the shelf. I have the AWD style roller bearings (MD706566 open cage/ 6207-2RSC3 sealed version) for the front diffs back in stock, and will be restocking the tapered roller bearings needed for 1G FWD applications, (MN168441), and 2G FWD applications (MD710663).

Yeah, I had a shop fire around 6 weeks ago that destroyed everything. I am not working on customer jobs for the time being, but will be resuming parts sales and will fire up the website once I get the speedo gears. I am still processing parts orders by email at [email protected] , I just had the website down for the time being while I am sorting stuff out.

The Quaife is easy and maintenance-free, it's great for something that gets driven frequently. It won't wear out, doesn't require special oil, and it doesn't have any negative traits for light usage. It's just not as great for hard launches.
The Kaaz will be a better diff for racing, but they can clunk while driving (inherent to the type of differential they are), and they require periodic rebuilds, requiring you to tear the trans down. For something you use mostly on the street, easy no-brainer to go with the Quaife.

I agree, the Quaife is service free; the KAAZ Super-Q version is set up initially as 100% lockup from the manufacturer, and can be disassembled and changed to less lockup, but that requires it being out of the transmission to do. The Super-Q version does have a longer service life and is less clunky than the regular DBM2010, hence why I always recommend the Super-Q (quiet) version that is WPC treated by the manufacturer, hence the higher cost than a regular DBM2010 differential. I only sell the Super-Q version.

The Quaife is a straight drop in solution and is rebuildable if needed, but rarely does it need anything unless there is a catastrophic failure. It is considerably more durable overall than the clutch type diffs and is primarily used in drag racing and street usage. The KAAZ differential is great for road racing and drag racing where you need adjustment to the amount of lockup the differential is set up for to work with the race car application.
