low oil pressure and whining tea kettle noise.

First off, car is a 90 awd tsi with just about every mod you can think of. All parts 2-3k miles old including fresh engine rebuild, new block, balance shafts removed, 16g turbo, fmic, turboback apexi, shep trans, act clutch,etc etc etc.

I searched and found a near exact post about my problem. However, the post was so hard to read and understand I can't gauge if it's the same for me. Also my pressure never actually reaches 0 and/or stays low.

When starting up the car the oil pressure is fine. After driving for a little I'll notice this whining noise at idle that sort of sounds like a tea kettle when it's heating up. It is low enough sound I can only hear it at idel ( not sure if it happens while driving (probably).)

Sometimes, the pressure with shift from pretty low to near the middle. It however never reaches how high it normally was before this problem started happening.

The noise is on the right side of the engine bay and sounds like its around the power steering pump or lower maybe.

Also, the engine temp gauge is SLIGHTLY colder than normal, but enough that I notice a difference on the stock temp gauge.

I have noticed no decrease in performance and no change on the dipstick.

Bunch of things: 1) - have you taken the PS belt off to see if that eliminates this noise?

2)-ALT bearings going out - how old is the ALT?

3)-Maybe the T-belt is too tight -adjuster not positioned correctly?

4)-Tensioner pulley and/or idler pulley hanging up from the sinch bolt on too tight and putting stress in their respective bearings?

5)-T cover rubbing against the belt?

6)-WP pulley aligned up with the respective pulleys for straight belt travel and WP pulley not singing against the T-cover?

-some options for you to peek at ... good luck-DSM
 
Hmmm, I think it might just be the alternator. I think the person that has installed it the past few times has done it wrong. I've replaced it at least 3 times in the past 9 months and maybe it's happening again, I'll know tomorrow.
 
Took it to a shop and they said my water pump was going bad. I just got the car back and the noise is now gone but the problem remains.

The oil pressure is normal now AT times but at idle still is extremely low / none. The oil light never actually comes on though, so is it possible its just the reading going bad on the stock gauge?
 
I'm not sure what weight the oil in it is as my car has been worked on so often. Also the motor only has around 5000 miles on it. What oil should I go for? Is it okay to get synthetic on a low miled motor?
 
Just put in 10w-30 seems to have fixed the problem.

Tap into the OFH with a mechanical gauge. Youll find it has more pressure at idle than what the gauge shows. I think when mine on the 2g was bottomed out it showed 20lbs or so on the mechanical which isnt bad. Rembember there a seperate oil pressure sending unit for the dummy light. If it comes on then you know the pressures have dropped.
