1G Loud pop, white smoke, leaking oil, can't tell where

I was cruising to work at around 70 mph, normal temp, normal oil pressure (I usually keep an eye on these things while driving).

Then a "pop" sounded like something dropped in/out of the engine bay, then a rush of white smoke from out of the hood smelled like a combination of burnt rubber, maybe oil, maybe coolant.

Almost immediately, I pressed in the clutch, shifted to neutral. Then after shock wore off, a few moments, I cut off the engine and cruised to the side of the road. The smoking stopped quickly (within a minute).

I can't remember if there was a knocking sound or not. There was some clanking, but I really don't know what caused it, if it was with the engine, or if it was something else. It all happened really fast.

Coolant level is close to normal, oil level is about a half a quart to a quart short of when I lest checked (I check almost every week.

The trail of fluid on the road appeared to be oil (too thin of a trail to tell), the only mess under the car is oil. Oil is green (what my valvoline VR1 turns to in between changes, always, normal...) So I doubt it was another car's oil somehow.

I cant see anything broken or loose. All hoses are tight and intact. The coolant system hoses are hard to squeeze (still appear to hold pressure fine). All oil lines are intact. Oil filter is on snug.

I pulled the plugs, all look normal. Jacked the car up, cant find anything except oil splattered randomly on the underside of the car. Most of the oil pools on the bottom of the oil pan. No major leaks, just a very small puddle of oil. Started turning the engine over by hand, no more oil drips.

I am debating what to check next and whether it would be a bad idea to start the car. Mechanical timing seems to be OK.

Don't know what to check next. Any ideas? Sound familiar?

Right off the bat It sounds like you need to check your block very carfully, i imagine youll find a small hole in it where you through a rod or something

I agree with 1gAWD ^^^

Any thoughts on buying a 12 year old BRAND NEW 2.3L 6-bolt long block? There's one for sale. Has reciepts, still in shipping box, from Class One inc in IL....

Depends on your goals with the car on what type of motor build to go with. What is the purpose of the car? DD, weekend toy, etc?

DD. I'm gonna need a dd for now so it might turn into a weekend car once I find a dd soon.

The big question was more so "does it matter that an engine has been sitting wrapped up for 12 years?"

It would depend on where the engine was stored. Was it climate controlled or inside all 12 years? I am getting ready to stick a 17 year old motor that sat in its donor car, under a tree, hood shut and good coolant and oil into a different body. Because it sat outside I'm doing timing components and rear and probably front main seals but i trust the motor. I'm going to scope the bores so I'm sure it doesn't have rusty bores but it turns over freely. Look in the cylinders and at the exposed valves for rust or corrosion. That's what I would do and if everything still looks shiney I'd trust it as long as it was a reputable shop. A fresh build would have been put together with assembly lube and oil which should still be present. MTC
I would look for the presence of condensation from being wrapped up but it should check out ok if you understand what to look for.

Awesome. 20+ PSI on an FP red HTA on E85 is HAULIN' @$$ :hellyeah: I hope to get mine there one day... But yea, with that kind of life, then I guess at the very least a minor rebuild would be good at this point. Good luck, and I'll pray to the car gods:pray:

And here is the damage

Wow thanks for the pics. Is it only the girdle that broke? (Not sure the technical name for that support bracket)

It broke while cruising/decelerating. 60-70mph on the freeway during my morning commute to work. Wasn't driving hard at all that morning. Must have given up its last straw?

Here's the relevant info. I was under the impression that this combination was on the light side of risky.

-Original OEM motor with 60k miles
-FP red
-E85
-Tuned by reputable tuner (same tune/setup for ~2 years)
-30-38psi depending on weather (winters I can do 38 easy)
-Bipolar driving style. Most of the time >75% LOL I am pretty calm. But at least once a week I go WOT. If the off ramp is clear, I go WOT. Usually to the speed limit ~6k rpm and not to the redline.
-Redline at 7500 rpm again, I rarely hit it.
-Any revving/taunting I do stops at 4k, my launch limit

I was shocked as hell. Have no idea why this would happen. Any pointers? What causes this to happen?

Link estimated my HP at ~400-450 (accurate car info entered, had car weighed etc...)

I did several 70-90mph regressions, I cut that in about 1.4 seconds on average.

That sucks, dude.

Block is trash, unless you get a new main cap and have it line bored. The crank looks like it may have survived. Some of the rods/pistons may be salvageable.

Have you looked around on the local DSM Facebook groups for a cheap shortblock?

That totally suks man. That stored engine is looking pretty good right now if you can buy it right.

Shortblock is not good for a core, head will likely need a rebuild. I removed everything in the engine bay, getting ready to pull the trans out the bottom, then the engine out the top. Unless it is easier to pull them both at the same time and separate them later... opinions?

I am using this as an excuse to get a built engine, because I don't see much else as a better cheaper option. I am about 90% sure I am going to grab a new 2.3L longblock with eagle rods, JE pistons, and hopefully some goodies in the head.

That 2.3 should make the FP red feel (aka spool) like a 20g tdo5h on steroids and put me more comfortably above 500hp as I feel I was pushing the limits of my setup trying to get there.

Here is how i pull mine. A/C left hooked up and power steering the same way both left in the engine bay
