2G Loud, new sound from turbo?

I just installed a K&N cone filter on my 98 GST. Everything seems great, it even seems to have solved my lag problem (drop in disposable was disgusting). So I jump in the car, drop the top, and proceed to run it down the road for a bit. As I accelerate I hear this wild space-ship-like sound. I'm trying to figure out what it is, and the only conclusion I can come to is the turbo, considering that the sound is really only happening when the boost starts kicking up. The problem is that I've never heard this sound before, and I'm not sure I could properly describe it with a gun to my head. The best unique descriptors I can put to it are metallic, and echo-y. I recorded a video to try and capture the sound, I can hear it in the video, though it's louder in the car.

Everything seems to be running great, better than before honestly. I'm just trying to make sure that the sound that I'm hearing is not a warning sign. Can't really afford a new turbo currently since I'm a go big or go home kind of guy.

Edit: the BOV is also significantly louder, I expected an increase, just not quite that much

How many pounds are you pushing? Honestly the car sounds completely fine to me man. Possibly the old filter you had was very restrictive and you've just never had it pull so good before?

Turbo cars need new/clean filters always so they can take the extra air in properly.

If the blow off valve really seems that much louder make sure the recirculated hose (assuming you're recirculated) hasn't cracked and is in good condition. However if this did occur it'd probably make the car run bad because the MAF would read incorrectly.

Sounds healthy, boost leak test, go do some pulls, write back.

Oh and you should definitely make a profile for you car that way we know what's done to it.

I think it is normal as well. I just replaced my stock 1g maf setup with an evo 8 maf and an injen cone filter. The sound was a night and day difference. I was a little worried at first too. Don't think you have anything to worry about though.

From the video, I can hear normal intake sound and bov sound. Installing a high flow air filter makes the intake sound louder.

Thanks for taking the time guys. I dropped by a buddy's house and picked up the stuff I needed for boost leak test, everything turned out A-OK. Drove around for a solid 45 min pretty aggressively, and the car is running so much better that it was as if I was driving a different car. The sound difference is just so insane, it really caught me off guard.

I've been meaning to get on that profile, just so busy lately. I'm gonna jump on that now while I've got some time. For reference, aside from the air filter, recently tinted windows, things like spark plugs and tires, and recall work: the car is 100% original factory

Maybe you got a exhaust leak starting and that made it louder.. This happened to me with my old laser it started to sound and run better. Then I realized it was my exhaust falling off after the down pipe, and it was the old restricted muffler that botched performance.

Changing the filter to a cone will greatly increase the intake/turbo noise your hear. Along with switching to a hard intake pipe. Everything sounds normal to me, just letting the car breathe more!

That is definitely normal. Those are the awesome sounds of your turbo and factory bov.
