Loud popping sound from rear.

On my way to work i experienced a loud popping sound coming out of the rear of the car. I only drove for about 100 yards or so then mad a bee line for home... Any insight?

Was this a loud popping out of the exhaust or a suspension component?

Suspension or drivetrain. I'm going to pull off the rear passenger wheel when I get a chance.

Maybe a rear axle? I never really thought about it but I know on the front when one of the boots rip and you turn it makes a popping noise. But on the rear you're not turning, but it could still do it if it gets really bad. Does the popping get faster as you go faster?

I didn't go very far, only about 100 yards or so. It was pretty loud and violent so I turned around and limped it home, maybe got up to 5 MPH. I'm actually getting ready now to go jack her up and take a gander.

Was it possibly a ticking noise? Axle?

Nope, a really loud popping noise... As you can see, I am a major procrastinator, still haven't left the computer yet... I'll eventually get to it tonight, or by Saturday night

Well, we pulled the wheel off last night and nothing looked out of ordinary. I slapped the wheel back on today and took her for a drive to try to recreate the sound, but it didn't do it. Maybe since i haven't driven it in about 4 days and it was really cold here (low teens), some ice just built up or something.

Try this one, jack up just one wheel in the back and try to turn it, if it does turn then you could of broken an axle or the rear diff.

I only say this because I managed to destroy the rear diff spiders on my car a few years back and it drove me nuts trying to hunt down the problem.

I tried that when I had it jacked up, all checked out fine. I drove her to work today, and it was fine...
