Loud thump then popping/clicking from rear end?

I was driving home from work the other day I stopped at a traffic light about 1/2 mile from my house. I turned right when I shift from 1st to 2nd there is a loud thump from the rear end then a constant popping/clicking noise. I limped it home with the popping/clicking continuing at anything over approx. 15 mph. I have been getting a slight thump from the rear end while accelerating for about a week prior I figured it was the carrier bearing going bad but hadn't gotten around to replacing it yet. The car does have polyurethane bushing in the rear and could use a new pair of shocks. All drivetrain fluids have recently been changed. I'm sure its something driveshaft/differential related but I'm not really sure where to start. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

What were you doing exactly when it happened? Were you letting off the clutch, or did you brake before pressing the clutch?

I was letting off the clutch after shifting into 2nd it wasn't a launch. Whatever broke it happened when 2nd gear engaged but the noise is coming from the rear so doesn't seem like a tranny issue. I was able to still drive it just a lot of constant popping from the rear.

Sorry for not replying quickly. Super hyper like I just snorted a bunch of cocaine. Haven't been like this in years. Lol any way. Did the back end pop up like it hit a bump? And is this an awd?

Sounds like a u-joint failed or your center support ripped apart and now your drive shaft is flopping around hitting the floor pan. Get underneath and check it out before it gets worse. You could have a broken sway bar link or something with the strut?!?

Since he said he has a differential might it be he chipped a gear tooth? Of worse. Hopefully not though

Sounds like a carrier bearing. Seems like a u-joint or chipped tooth on the gear would make the noise at all speeds not just when he gets over 15mph. Here's hoping it's something simple.

I second the carrier bearing, id say that or a CV joint on one of the axles is probably pretty likely.

Well I figured out the problem the previous owner really had this rigged up. The bushing for the rear differential mounting bracket was completely shot so they put a polyurethane one in its place the problem is its too small so it was just sitting in there. Also the bolt that holds the differential to the subframe had backed out and was hitting the axle I assume that's were the popping was coming from. I uploaded a pic to show the damage.

Now I just gotta find out where to get another bracket or what size the correct bushing should be. So far I haven't been able to really find anything.
