Tonight i pulled into a parking lot, and just like "that" i hear a very loud scraping/grinding noise coming from my rear end. The car drives the same, but when i'm under 10mph, it is very loud, especially when turning. There is nothing dragging, but it sounds exactly like something is. Any ideas what it could be. Like i said, it just happened, no huge bump or hard stop(or launch). Could it be my rear end?? I can't tell exactly, but i know its in the rear end, not sure on center/sides/ how far back.

Cough Cough, transfercase maybe, cough cough...
I don't really have any info on it. But seriously consider changing your thread titles to be more descriptive, like Loud Grinding from rear of my AWD or something like that.

Then people will know you have a AWD, with a transfer case, and more people with AWD, or people who know about this will see and read. :thumb:

But isn't the transfer case basically right under the shift knob/forks. This is the rear, way in the rear.

I would check the differential in the back of the car. Thats what makes your rear wheels spin and in essense makes AWD. Check the fluid or change it before somehthing more serious than a grind would happen.

try checking yur cv boots in back, they could be torn and the grease could have dried up and messed up yur axle.

Is their grease fittings on the driveshaft or anywhere else, should they get greased every so often?

ya but lack of grease in a CJ joint couldnt cause an instant grind. it would happen over time. My fronts were ripped and i had grease everywhere..no grinds.

WHEEL BEARING. Have had the same problem and thats exactly how it sounded to me. Have fun if you are going to fix it yourself. They are tough, beside everything being rusted, you have to take the whole CV shaft completely out.

Good luck

I checked everything, and now i feel like a dumbass. Everything in the drivetrain checked out fine, actually, everything was in perfect condition. I then took both rear wheels off, and found my problem. My right rear caliper had caught or froze, and the outside 3/4inch of my rotor was about 3-4mm down from the rest(and it wasn't a nice smooth edge, it was rougher then about 40grit sandpaper. I have something to do on monday now!

The thing is though, they never squeaked, never shook, and i checked the pads, and there still is wear left on them, little, but there is compound left. I need to pull it all apart and see what gave.

Did you read my last post? Its solved, and it was the brakes(right rear brake caliper freezeing shut)
