So I found a 2g eclipse gst that is missing it’s key but it has a clean title and it’s been sitting for 4 months. Owner said it’s running but lost it after leaving it at his shop. What do you guys think? Should I go for it and buy it or is it risky?

I'd say buying anything can you can't start and hear run or take for a test drive is risky. Question is, how much is the owner asking for it? Also, how much $ do you have to put into it?

Mmm... at 4K I'd be very reluctant if I couldn't drive it or do a compression test. Parts are getting harder to find. Decent deal if the car is in good running order, but I'd want assurance of that before I buy.

Yeah that’s why I’m hesitant he said he drove it to the location it’s at right now 4 months ago where he didn’t touch it after

He lost the key after he drove it to the location it is at right now and he lost the key so he never drove it after which was 4 months ago

Check oil dipstick for oil condition, lift front end up, take left tire off, bring half inch breaker bar to rotate the engine. I wouldnt even acknowledge a gst at 4k. 4k risk? Texas has gst for like 400. My 93 was 400, my 1gsx was free. You can probably purchase a 4k car thru rixx.

Im from Chicago that’s why there isn’t many or if any for sale around here in decent condition this is the only one, I’d prefer a gsx but there isn’t one that I’ve seen

If the owner has no interest in getting a key made, for that price, I’d look elsewhere. These days, I think it’s worth a road trip to pick up one in better condition or the trim level you want even if it’s pretty far and/or cost a little more. You’d be happier with the purchase in the end.

In the midwest a decent SHELL goes for 4k and up, this is not a bad deal where I come from if the body is nice on it. The person who's name is currently on the title can take the title and a photo id to a Mitsubishi dealer and have a new key cut for the car, or SHOULD be able to if nothing has changed lately, the other way to hear it run is to pop the switch from the column and hotwire it, the column will be locked though, but you could hear it run at least.

The body is in pretty good condition doesn’t look like it has rust but I also have to look underneath and look at it in person because it snows over here a lot

Does anyone know how to Hotwire the car? It’s a 97 eclipse gst just to see if it starts up

You could just separate the electrical part of the ignition switch from the mechanical part and then turn the electrical part with a flat head screwdriver, or buy another switch with a key and plug it in and use that to start the car, again this wont allow you to drive the car, just to start it, below is what the switch itself will look like.

i think motomattx's idea of getting another ignition switch is the best idea. I dont get the "with a key" part though,
Just get another ignition switch, it doesnt matter if its new or used. then you can just remove the 3 screw from the column cover, pop it apart, unplug the installed IG switch and plug in the new one. Then turn it with a flat head or any car key or popsicle stick or millions of other things.

you could pull out the installed one but,
The switch is held in place by 2 little screws but they are a huge ass pain in the ass to remove.

Once the ignition switch is removed, HERE is a replacement. It won't work the locks but it will start the car.

If hes serious about selling the car and is will to backup his promises, tell him to simply take out the ignition lock cylinder, door lock cylinder, or trunk lock cylinder and go get a key made. It should cost only $20-40 for a locksmith to make him a new key.

I agree 💯. At least the ignition cylinder and that won’t take long.

First, I agree. 4k might be a decent deal. Second - do that ^^ - don't take a risk.

Third, I recently tried to get a new key cut by my local dealer by the vin (as I had in the past), but they informed me they no longer have the ability to reference what VIN got which key set. Bummer, I know...

If someone knows of a dealer that can still do it, please share!
