Looking into buying this car. Don't have much more info then what is listed, still waiting for a call back.

I'm not new to DSM's but not sure what this thing is really worth as I don't have alot of experience with aftermarket gear.

I know that I have told people to buy stuff on here (it isn't my money) but no one wants a lemon. So tell me what you think!

I will post more info as it comes available.

Car is in Ct anyone no someone from there or no whose car this is?

What are the trouble spots on a 1G? (I had a 2G)

Thanks!

I have the ability and the time.

Correct me if I am wrong but it is simply

1)drain and drop pan
2)pull off piston caps
3)pull out pistons
4)re-ring
5)put all back together

(please don't destroy me for not being painfully specific)
Maybe throw new main bearings and what not while i am in there.

Only problem is I am in an apartment and can probably only have the car apart in the parking lot for a couple of days. I was thinking of having a shop or finding some DSMer out here do it for me/help me with it. I don't want to waste my money but don't want to let it rot outside either.

Also, If i went with better pistons what should I go with?

Yeah i believe you need to drain the coolant too,but the pistons can be done with the motor in the car still.I would deffinantly change the rod bearings on them too.If you decided to go with better pistons you can use evo 8 pistons or weisco pistons with eagle rods. There are a couple of other options too.But i would find out if it is 6 bolt or 7 bolt first i forget what year the car is that you are looking at.Late 1992 can be 7 bolt and 93 and up is 7 bolt. You can verify this by the oil pan.You can only use the evo 8 pistons if it is a 7 bolt.

It's going to be pretty darn easy to remove the pan and pistons from below, the troublesome part would be how you would get those pistons with new rings back in without compressing them =P. Head's got to come out unless you have a hand-held piston ring compressor (plier type). To be honest, 3,000 seems a little bit too much, I would offer 2,500..maybe less because you don't know if the rings really need to be replaced or if the problem lies elsewhere. Either way if it is indeed the rings that need to be replaced, it's going to take some time to do the job..

ON a sidenote: if you plan on upgrading your piston assemblies there are plenty of aftermarket manufacturer's for pistons, Manley which I used on my build, Mahle,Wiseco's..or you can even do what Galant mentioned about Evo pistons. Anyways the correct way/procedure as some may point out is if you are putting on new pistons/bearings/rods to have your rotating assembly balanced..this would require the block and rotating assembly to be removed from the car and sent to a machine shop..so the work does get quite extensive than just doing it in the parking lot if that's your plan.

Head has to come off in order to remove pistons. They will not fit out of the bottom. Number the pistons to the correct cylinder if using the same ones. Bearings are a good idea but remember the tangs go on the same side and i believe face the exhaust side of the motor. Someone correct me if this is backwards. Good luck it will surely be a learning experience.

I have had the head off of the 2G when I had it to replace the valves (timing belt failure due to oil contamination) and that is nothing I can do in a parking lot without rushing it. Does anyone know anybody or any good shops in the new london Ct. area that would do a good job for not too much money?

I agree with an undiagnosed oil burn $3000 seems a little steep. I have yet to hear back from the guy but the least I can do is look at it. He also didn't say how many miles are on it/engine history/6 or 7 bolt (Which i assume he would had he been a member here) but I will post what I learn from him for further discussion.

Also, does anyone know if that is a factory color?

Also, seeing as 6 bolt is more desirable than a 7 how do I verify that via the oil pan?

$3000 base price, plus taxes and tags, probably another $250 at least. Most reputable shops will completely rebuild the engine, add in another $1500 minimum. Before you're done you'll probably have $5000 in a car thats worth $3500.

I figure a fair price would be around $2000 to $2200. Seems like hes trying to recoup all the cost of the upgrades he put into it.

Plus, just looking at the interior, I don't see even a boost guage let alone a wideband. Not sure how he tuned it correctly. Add in another $250 for minimal guages.

Sounds like he's wwanting top dollar for a substandard vehicle.

Honestly $3000 with the parts and pieces it comes with I think is worth it. It could be something as simple as valve seals. Honestly you could do rings valve seals, bearings and gaskets throughout the whole engine fairly cheaply. That would also be a good time to replace the timing belt with a good strong one as well. But to answer your question the head still has to come off to do the job right and make sure you check it all out while you are in there. Then you also get to see exactly what is in the engine and not just go off what somebody tells you. Buyer should beware on every buy. But I mean if you can get it cheaper by all means, we all like a discount. Hopefully this helps. I personally like to pull the engine all the way out when i pull it apart. that way i hit all the needed areas without space restrictions.

Went and looked at it. Needs a good clean on the outside but interior would be premium with a couple of replaced body panels. Idled poorly but started right up. Did burn quite a bit of oil. Has been repainted and they didn't do a good job. Probably worth quite a bit in parts. No idea how many miles are on the car or on the engine. Probably with a bit of engine work would be a really quick car.

I'm passing though, too much work.

Would make a nice track car
