Looking at buying used un-registered DSMlink, I have a question

A local is selling a complete setup and is willing to hook it up to my car and to show me it works. Problem is he got it from a friend who never registered it with DSMlink and he also lost the box or whatever paperwork needed to get it registered. What can I tell the seller to do to get it registered? Does this still sound like the real deal? I don't want to buy an unregistered unit.
