Here is the story: I sold my old apexi SAFC to $150 to a friend so i could buy DSMlink for my 2G GST. About 2 weeks ago i bought a '95 Eprom ECU for $200. Next is to buy DSMlink $595 plus shipping. Thats $795+.

Yesterday i was talking to a guy who is from Puerto Rico. He lives about 2 hours from were i live. He is selling me a '95 Eprom ECU with dsmlink chip on it already installed for $350. The guy right know its on the states but his father has the computer here in Puerto Rico. He told me that he has the cable with him on the states and if i want to buy his dsmlink set up i have to give him my vehicle serial number and other infromation so DSMlink company can reprogram the cable so i can use it. How true is this? Can i just buy the computer with the chip and later buy the cable directly from DSMlink and can will it work?

What should i be looking for on this computer so i will not be buying another thing? He says that the chip says dsmlink and the cover of the ecu also says dsmlink and its authentic. I dont want to be grabed by the neck. Is it safe to give information about my car to a guy on a phone?

I know its a ggood price. so i can sell later my stock 95 ecu on ebay for about $200 and i only payed $150 for a ecu and dsmlink.

Maybe i am going to call him later today asking if i can test the ecu on my car before buying it.

Tell me waht you guys thing? should i try it? What do i need to knw that its and authentic dsmlink setup? Need hel please, dont want to loose $350.

The guys at DSMLink will need to know your e-mail/home address and they will need the chip number from the previous owner to tie the 2 together so you are the new owner of the unit. I never gave any VIN or serial number for my car when I ordered mine.

No, you can not buy the cable seperatly. The cable is not programmed. It has an adapter that ties into the OBD2 port on you car. YOU WILL HAVE TO GET THE ADAPTER AS PART OF THE PURCHASE from whoever you are buying from.

You can always e-mail Tom or Dave at DSMLink and ask them if it is indeed a legitimate copy of DSMLink. If the guy is honest, he won't have a problem with giving you the number off the DSMLink chip so you can confirm it's good.

If you are buying a used DSMLink setup you should recieve an ECU with the DSMLink chip already installed and the OBD2 adapter at the minimum.
You will need the previous owners info so you can transfer ownership to you.

You can actually buy a cable seperately and you can also download the program from the DSMLink site.

What information about the previous owner do i need? ( the guy said that he was going to take care of it)
Can i test the dsmlink ecu by just unpluging the harness of my stock ecu and plug it on the ecu that he is selling me and while holding the dsmlink ecu in my hand can i start the engine and the laptop to know if its the real thing?

is there a phone number so i can call Tom or Dave at DSMLink. i think were going to trade this wekend.

Search around on thier site...

Straight from the forums: Transfer of ownership...
Just send us the new owner's name and e-mail address along with the old owners name and e-mail address: [email protected]

If you had the ECU, OBD2 adapter and a cable plus a laptop you could pull your ECU and replace with the new one, turn the car to the on position and check to see if you can connect to the ECU. For a 97-99 you will have to swap some plug wires plus invert the CAS before you actually start it, also double check what the injector global and deadtime are set to and adjust accordingly.

I knew that info was there somewhere...

thanks for all the information. Im asking all of this cus i find it strange a guy selling me a eprom ecu with dsmlink for only $350. i dont want to be ripped off with a knock off copy. actually he has 2 for sale at $350.

i will let you guys know about the sale.

ps. Is there a way i can get into the dsmlink forums without the user id. Ive been tring to get into it to see what kind of support they have in there but its not possible.

Not anymore. If you didn't read the link Ed provided.

2G Cables - replacement/purchase

Believe it or not, your 2G DSMLink cable/adapter is the key to your DSMLink package. Do yourself a huge favor by treating it as such. Don't lose it and don't leave it lying around in your car while you're away. If you damage your adapter, we'll gladly repair, often free of charge; but the damaged adapter (at least the internals) must be returned to us first.

Because people are copying our chips, selling them, and then telling the buyers to contact us to get a replacement cable/adapter, we've had to suspend sales of the adapter entirely. This makes it very awkward for someone that has their car broken into or simply loses their cable. We can't distinguish one situation from the other on our end. We tried for awhile, but then people got wise to what we were asking for in terms of "proof" and just started faking that.

So we're left with no choice but to simply stop replacing cables. I suspect this is why other shops selling similar products had to do the same thing. You can thank anyone that you find selling copies of our stuff for the hassle.

If you ever want any future support from DSMlink make sure you cross every t and dot every i according to their rules.

There are too many people out there trying to copy their hard work and the DSMlink guys have pretty much given up on those who have not followed the instructions when it comes to ownership transfers, and lost cables.

It is not possible to get into the dsmlink forum without a registered copy of dsmlink. If I were you, I would forget about trying to buy it from that guys cause it sounds like a scam. Just start saving and get a new real copy of the link.

just think of it as like rebuilding your engine, dont skimp out on the important pieces. when a deal is too good to be true, it must be false

If the guy has the cable and adapater, for 350 that is a pretty good deal if you can find the ecu for another 200. save you a couple hundred, but you still wont have dsmlink forum access

I know it sounds a little strange for that price but the guy told me that he need it information about me and email address sothe people at dsmlink can register me.

Im not going to give him my money until i got my dsmlink user id and password and plug it on my car and runs.

On a 2G you CAN buy the CABLE seperatly, it is only a 6' patch cord...in my post I said...

The OBD2 adapter is actually the thing they will not sell you seperatly...the cable can be purchased just about anywhere.

But at $350 complete and he has several copies available...I would steer clear of this guy.

Sorry, your absolutly correct it's their OBD II adaptor that is also the security key for the 2G DSMlink. The "cable" they provide is just a DB9 serial cable like you state. I keep getting their cable (adaptor included) with the pocketlogger OBD II cable that's one piece.

On a side note is it a simple process to change out all the parameters on V3? for an example if I am running a gm maft and he was not or if I have bigger injectors is it easy to change on the program?

old thread new question I know I know.

Yes, it is easy to change setup specifics. Just a matter of getting on your laptop and clicking a couple tabs.

Unlike 2G V2 DSMLink any changes you make are saved when you power the ECU off and don't go away if you disconnect the battery so there is no need to order V3 with specific defaults like you did with V2 on the 2G.

If you buy a used V3 you'll want to reset back to the initial defaults and set it up just like if it was new.
