looking to buy a used engine with head off of it... how do i check that the bearings and rings are good?

In all honesty, if your buying a block with just pistons, rod and crank you should just put new bearings and rings in. They don't cost that much, and if you have a shop do it for you it shouldn't cost much more than $300- $400 to do. Then you know you have good engine with no second thoughts. Also if it hasn't been done go ahead and do the balance shaft removal... it may save you from a headache later on.

But to check rings the way I know of is a compression test or leak down test, which you need the head on the car to do. For the bearings, not really sure... for thrust bearing you could check the end play of the crank. You can find that info in Vfaq.

Another thing that deals with the rings.... you should check the cylinder walls and make sure the cross hatch is still visible and not worn.
