Longer gears in trans

I know all the 4g63 people will cringe at this, but you could get the 420a. It has long gearing..LOL

The 420a trans does have taller gears than the ones that come is the 4g63 cars, however you could never mate a 420a trans to a 4g63 in eclipse because the 4g63 cars have a transverse transmission where as the 420a cars do not. Also no parts internally from either trans is able to be swapped from one to the other. And last but not least it is already not that hard for 4g63 powered cars to tear up factory transmissions that are built with a lot higher quailty parts than you would ever find in a trans found in a 420a car, 420a transmissions were really intended for low hp applications and no part of them should ever touch a 4g63.

Evo gear set will solve all your problems. I launched in 2nd until i had my trans built because 1st gear was pretty much useless. Also cruising on the hwy doing 80+ kinda sucked because the engine was at such a high rpm. With the Evo gear set you will have a higher top speed and lower rpm at interstate/hwy speeds.
 
however you could never mate a 420a trans to a 4g63 in eclipse because the 4g63 cars have a transverse transmission where as the 420a cars do not.

Actually both cars use a transverse mounted engine. The difference is that they sit 180 degrees differently in the engine bay. Transverse is where the crankshaft is parallel to the drive axles and longitudinal is where the engine is perpendicular to the axle or parallel with the drive shaft.
 
Wait I don't get it. Last time I read about the evo gearing you would change the fifth gear out. Which makes sense. But that kit is only 3rd &4th gears? You dont drive in 3rd,or 4th on the interstate so howv will this help interstate 5th gear driving?
 
Only the Evo 8, and up trannys sit on the same side as the 420a's tranny does... There are 2 reasons a longer geared setup are good for turboed cars (1.) is you hold boost longer in the gears (everyone pretty much knows this) and (2.) The longer gears allow you to make more power without grenading your tranny. Why?.. Because think of it like this. Think of your car as a 10 speed bike. Now in 1st gear on a bike it is really easy to get up to speed and you use alot more pressure on that smaller gear..Switch to the last gear and its effort less and climbing hills are a breeze with that bigger gear. (have you ever had your chain pop right off on first gear when you put too much load on it trying to go fast?..I have alot!.. Now try doing that on the last gear.. its impossible!.... This being said Yes, Your car will be slower with the longer gears n/a but throw on a turbo and it will take the abuse... That is why our cars can make 600hp on oem rebuilt trannys. I would definately get longer gearing for your 4g63 trannys!.. Especially a longer first gear, if it is possible. It's better all around!... Um, you really don't know what you're talking about at all when it comes to 420as... The trans on them are absolute SHIT. :toobad: Even on a good working trans with good synchros they shift like crap at high RPMs (ask Justin). :banghead: No oem rebuild on those trans is going to hold 600hp... :nono:

Looks like Shep offers an upgrade for an EVO III first gear.

So get your facts straight!... I can tell you one car that has a crappy transmission though... A 2001 Ford Mustang v6 convertable;)

No, we shouldn't all go out and buy 420a DSMs just to have longer gears connected to a truly inferior engine. You think equal length half shafts is something only a 420a can do? LOL. And you don't have problems with torque steer when you have an AWD car which already has equal length half shafts. The OP asked about a 1g trans and you somehow managed to drag Evos and 420as into the convo.

You think us 4g guys are arrogant, but you would get a lot less attitude if you QUIT POSTING BULLSHIT!

Why not just change the diff gears? Or is that not possible in these cars? I know it's the #1 upgrade in the mustang community because I've owned a few. Much easier than pulling a tranny apart, too.

Thats only cause they have a rear diff. We don't.. Well the gsx might.

This thread was answered after post #2....everything else is unnecessary B.S. about a platform which doesn't even apply to the OP's question whatsoever.

If you want to talk 420A's, do so in a thread where the tech question actually applies to a 420A, or start your own thread in the 420A bolt-on forum where even Probationary members have access and posting permissions.

Thats only cause they have a rear diff. We don't.. Well the gsx might.

Fwd and awd cars both have differentials. The ring gears are removable on both which would make changing the gears out very easy on a fwd or awd car if they were readily available.
