Sherwood Park,
I am looking for some new light weight wheels prefferably in a 17". So far the wheels that caught my eye are:

5Zigen FN01R-C in a 17x8 25,35,43mm offset (anyone know there weight)
WedsSport TC-005 17x8 32,38,42mm offset (14.9lbs)

This thread will only be useful if you include which offsets are available with a 5x114 bolt pattern.

it says you need a pass code to open. maybe this is just because i was using photoshop CS let me know if anyone else is haven this problem.

Everything you need to answer your question is there. :)

The problem with that, as with most wheel information sources, is that you can never seem to find all the information in the same place. And as jtoby intimated, any list is not particularly useful unless it’s complete.

Anyway, here are some observations I’ve made while researching wheels:
· If they don’t list the weight in an add, it’s not “light.”
· Light weight wheels are almost always simple five or six spoke designs with no embellishments.
· Logically, for every set of aftermarket wheels purchased, there should be a set of used wheels for sale. There is not.
· When you search for “light” wheels on ebay, all you find are “Gram Lights”
· When you search for “forged” wheels on ebay, all you find are hundreds of “forged design” wheels. False advertising? The seller doesn’t think so. Many of his customers do.
· When you search for “used” on ebay you find dsm swirlies and the like. You do not find someone selling a set of used FN-01R’s for a hundred bucks.

Can you tell I like to shop ebay?

Here is the reader’s digest condensed version of the widely circulated wheelweights.net list. There is only a couple I’m familiar with. Perhaps we can add a few, like the missing Rota’s, and take away a few that are not available in DSM lug pattern and offset.

 It's a website. You only need Adobe Reader installed.

That may be so, but Lunch_Box listed two wheels, one of which he didn't know the weight for. The link I gave shows the weight for the wheel he was inquiring about.

According to wheelweights.net, the FN01R-C, 17x8 is 17 lbs.

For the amount of money the two wheels you listed cost, you might want to go through the list of wheels wret posted. You can do a lot better than 17 lbs. , and the Wedsports are very $$$ .

Yup. They are also cast. Curiuos, huh?

A little, I always thought lightweight wheels were forged and not cast. I remember reading somewhere that the material texture was too "random". I just can't remember the details it's very vague in my memory. But I also did read that due to advances in manufacturing, cast wheels can be made almost as light as forged for less money. So it wouldn't surprise me to see some of the wheels that are considered "lightweight" are made of cast material.

We should add to your list SSR Competitions. The 17x8s are 14.6 lbs. Not as light as the CP-035 Rs, but not as expensive either.

Let's define our search criteria. My own search includes wheels that are 17 inches in diameter 8 to 8.5 inches wide and available with 35 to 40mm offset. Lunchbox, this is your thread. Feel free to change these parameters if they don't fit what you are looking for.

Then, I guess we first need to establish what light weight means. The average of the 100 wheels available in 17 inch diameter and 8-8.5 width is 22 pounds. I even made a little histogram for it. As you can see the largest grouping is near 24 pounds. This would seem to imply that almost anyone can pour liquid aluminum into a mold to make a seventeen inch round, rolling objec that weighs around 24 pounds. Those that do it with particular care and skill can make it less than 20. A select few can make a wheel less than 18 pounds and that's where I limited my search parameters (actually I let a few less than 19 sneak in).

Discussion?

Wret your parameters are fine. I haven't had a chance to go and find all of the rims you posted but I think we should include a price with the rims.

A company that Mitch (Suparata) pointed out to me is "Team Dynamics"
www.teamdynamicsusa.com

They have "race" wheels that are strong, and lightweight. as well as not costing very much. Not too diverse in the design, and some of those are NOT light. Look at the pro race/pro comp/pro rally

and for those of you who are lazy... a lb is a Kg*2.205 therefore to stay under 19 lbs, it needs to be less that 8.6 Kg

IMHO, I think lightweight is 16lbs or less. But:

So discussion over, as far as this thread goes? On the flip side, having the cutoff at 17 gives Lunchbox more options. So lets start adding prices to your list Wret.

This is gonna be a thread worth sticking to the top when everything is said and done.

Here are some prices that I was able to find.

That weight is a little high. The Enkei website states that in that size they are 15.5 lbs.

http://www.enkei.com/RacingSeriesSpecs/RPF1.html

I have the same wheel in 17X8.5 - 40 offset, and Enkei says it weighs 16 lbs which I confirmed when I got them.

Price most places seems to be around $250, but I got them for a little over $200 from here:

http://www.wheelcomponents.com/

Also, while they are not forged, they have some other process that is supposed to make them almost as strong for obviously a lot less money than a typical forged wheel.

http://www.enkei.com/technology.html

Also, I noticed there are currently a set of these wheels on DG's car.

No, I don't work for Enkei. I just have them and have been happy with them.

These rims are nice! 5Zigen FN01R-C Black with a polished lip, most places they are on back order. Don't know the wieght though.

They are 17 lbs as mentioned above.

Actually your weight on the Wedsports is wrong.

According to Tire Rack's ad in the new Grassroots Motorsports the 17x8 wedsports weigh in at 15.4-15.9 depending on backspacing. 17x7 come in at 13.9-14.6 though.

BTW, 17x8 are $439 per wheel OMG

I read my FN01R-C's to be around 16.5 lbs.

Then again, I measured it on a bathroom scale. :| I looked at Kosei K1 TS's and they weigh 14.1 lbs for a 17x7 +36, but 17x8 +35's are WAY more expensive for the same size FN-01R-C. Personally, I love them. They look good and you can discern a difference. They're a big step down in weight compared to my Rota Tarmacs ... Those were 20 lbs each.

I have 17" X 7" Motegi Trak Lites and I lovem'. They're forged so and weigh in at 14.5 Lbs. They've damn near eliminated my wheel hop and are considerably strong. I don't try to hit holes but it's pretty hard not to in PA. I've hit a couple pretty hard with no ill effects other than a heart palpitation. I was looking at FNO1R's (forged version of the FNO1R-C's) but from reviews I saw they were like soft butter when it came to hitting pot holes, and were also more expensive.
I paid around $1500 to get them with tires mounted and balanced.

I've heard some good things about the Trak Lites. I was a little leery of a light weight forged wheel from a company that specializes wheels that are high in bling, low in cost and heavy in weight. They seem to be gaining a good reputation though. Too bad they only come in seven inch width.

I have 17X7.5 ssr competition's(12.7 lbs) with 235x45 khumo mx's(20 lbs) for a total of 32.7 pounds before theres any tire wear. Had them on for 2 years and I've even driven around NY a bit-lots of pot holes with no problems at all. It was abit pricey, around 1950 shipped from the tire rack, but its about the lightest combo you can find.

I'll probably be going with Kosei for for my next set. The K1 racings are only 16lbs in 17x7.5 and of course the 16x7.5 would be even lighter. They also make the K1 TS which is only 14.1 lbs in 17x7, which is pretty good considering they're half the cost of the 17x7.5" SSR Comp's that weigh in at a mere half pound lighter. The price difference alone would buy you another set of race rubber for them.

I know if I searched a little longer I could probably find the weight of the stock swirlies. But I don't think in the wheelweights.com site that its lists the 16" wheels and the other DSM parts weight page seems to have been taken down. Probably worth mentioning in this thread?
