Kerosene is what he actually used. You can use gasoline etc... But kerosene is clear, so you can tell if there is still dirt or oil in your lifters easier than gasoline.

I tried to look it up on Lowes and Home depot because I used to buy it there by the can, but it looks like they only have heater burner grade kerosene in plastic jugs.

I looked at the MSDS (data sheet) for the home depot one and it appears to be fine. (I am not a scientist).
