2G Life span of tuned motors.

I would like to hear ppl experiences with lifespan of tuned motors in dd with mods and how many miles driven.

My current motor is:
E85 10.5:1 wiseco hd
Fp green @18psi
Liquimoly 10w-60 full syntethic.
Bs delete and pretty high oilpressure (105psi @7krpm)
10000 miles on daily driving.
No problems so far with engine.


It would be nice to hear experiences how long your tune lasted and what was the cause of failure.

If you have 10000 miles (or Kilometers, either), that motor will last you a good long time. Keep the boost down on it like it is now and it should go to 100000 with the proper maintenance which I am sure you are up on!

Well.....yea.
I can't say I do as I speak Erik..... but my DD (the Saturn SC2) that I built 2 years ago (all stock) just turned over 30k last week and I was super excited. I built it while teaching my youngest son how to do overhauls and even I hadn't seen one of those motors. I told him to be proud that the first motor he had anything to do with has lasted 30k and I expect it to last well over 100k and into my retirement (that was my goal, to have the DD until I retire and get a EVO)

Boost is a nice thing. My orginal goal was 24 psi but my clutch cant take more than 520nm currently.

I think high comp motors could be really nice with somewhat smaller turbos.

From my experience, I would take more boost over higher compression. I have a 10:1 motor and it is finicky on octane. It want's (needs) high octane and when you boost it, you have timing issues if you run crappy fuel or can only get 91-93 octane. My 9:1 motor likes the junk 91 octane I can get at the pump better, but still no more than 5* timing on gas. On E85, I have it up to 15*, so of course it runs better and the motor likes it better. I run between 30 and 40 lbs of boost (yes daily) so the compression holding back the timing hurts performance unless I run E.

I run only E85 on high comp and in the past iv seen e85 eating cylinders pretty fast but nowdays im using redline e85 additive in my fuel.

Though my car is not a daily it’s a 10:1 1/2 filled block street/ strip car. Run VR1 20w50 in it and change the oil every 500 miles or so. Have right around 1,400 miles on it, but they are very hard miles. I broke the motor in on 25psi from a 62mm and every time I get it out it’s ran hard. I have no worry’s. Plan to tear it down every few years and inspect it.

My own experience is that lack of oil in e85 is wearing honing marks in cylinder walls. Like its too dry. This is only my 2nd ethanol motor so im not too experienced with this subject and this is reason im using additive with e85. I also think its better to run higher oil temps while using e85 and run as lean as possible afr while cruising to reduce e85 in your motor oil.

Pump RON95 and 8.8:1 pistons (closer to 9.0:1 real CR due to wrist pin height)
E16G @15psi (spiking to 18 because I like to live on the edge)
Motul 6100 10w-40 semi-synthetic

5300 miles (8500)km since rebuild, 80% daily driving around the city and some longer distance drives.

It's very strong, no ticks, no knocks, but it's still untuned (AFR looks normal). Butt dyno says closer to 270 crank hp from the increased airflow and pump, I bet the duty cycle is 80%+, but I am just guessing here. ECMlink is still out of reach

I am soooo like you with my car, she always gets me there but I am hard on her everytime I drive her (the 92 auto car). I drove the piss out of the Red Talon too and will continue too once I get the head back on her. My mostly stock 90 GSX is the only one that doesn't get hammered on each time it is driven and it has 289k on its clock.

My motor was the first one I ever built. It has been going 8 years and 40k miles strong at 30+ psi its whole life and makes around 500WHP now. Still has 155 across the board on 9:1 compression. It was never really much of a daily after the engine build so those are a spirited 40k. Not to mention it had some pretty shitty tunes on it at some points while I was learning to tune. I have not had to touch the bottom or top end for anything other than head gasket which was my fault. I had someone experienced teaching me when I built it and have been able to successfully replicate it a few times since with my other motors. If its done right it will last a good long while. Once you start closing in on 800hp I am sure that goes down drastically. When mine finally lets go I wont be the least bit mad. Its done its job. This is all on E85.

Evo 8: stock motor, has 30k original miles. I've put about 15k miles on since I had it tuned . Bought it with about 16k in 2016 bone stock. 338 whp

2009 civic si (DD): Has about 90k original miles, stock motor, tuned on flashpro. 211 whp

2018 STI (DD): Been tuned on accessport since new. Has a little over 10k miles now. 320whp

99 Eclipse gst: 30k original miles. Has about 34k miles now. Haven't put enough on this one to judge it yet. 320 whp.

Mainly interested in build motors. There is alot of things to go wrong or right and maintenance but im interested in general how long ppl can keep their morors running on different setups.

With my 20-30 year old cars I'm finding that the motor is not the thing requiring most of my attention. Over the last 5 years or so I've had to focus on gaskets & anything rubber like CV boots, seals, & mounts in suspension & drive train, etc.

I had my engine built by a company that makes F1 cars. They are highly respected (Le mans, Limerock, Watkins glen) competitors. Fortunately I have a friend who works for them and they did mine after hours. After speaking with the builders on what psi/turbo setup I was going to run and how I was going to use it, they said I should expect 12-25k before a rebuild would be needed. Lets hope that is not the case!

My build is a complete Manley rotating assembly paired with a 35r @ approx 28psi.

I think it boils down to how well its built, how well its tuned, and how badly you abuse them.

I guess I’m the only that’s still running the slowboyracing block . Purchase this block in 2012 and still going strong till this day 30+ psi. Only problem I had so far is breaking drivetrain parts.

Built my motor ( 1g in sig ). 9:1 compression, broke it in at 20 psi on the 14b.

Slapped the Holset on, turned the boost to 30 and put 20k on the motor. No problems.

I even pulled the pan to check for issues (I forget why). No wear on crank or rod bearings.

Going to put it into my 2g next.

It depends on who builds the motor, the tolerances of the build, and making sure you check for problems after.

Lot of people use shops they don’t know, get a motor back, and expect it to last forever while murdering the engine with a horrible tune and poor maintenance. They are surprised when things go south.
