Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

Anyone else having heatsoak problems on this xs kit. The piping was nice and cool when the weather was 50 deg but now that we are in 80's the piping gets hot. I used to be able to grab the uip by the fan and it was nice and chilly. I popped my hood yesterday after 1 run and the piping was freaking hot.WTF

Got My kit today! Will start the Install on monday.. I have pics of my front end all apart and the kit looked good when i got it.. I can't wait. I'm gonna be running a 50t. Any one have any hands on knowledge of how much i will need to cut with the 2gb talon front bumper.. You can PM that so it doesn't clutter the thread. Updates soon!

You have to take off a good 2-3" around the center opening. It's easy to measure it when the core and bumper is mounted. Using a good dremel with a fiber cutoff wheel seems to be the best.

So is this core inefficient when its warm outside? Thats pretty bad if after only one run the piping is hot. How much boost are you running and on what turbo. Just wondering.

i just got the drivers side tubing routed. i would say the hardest part of the install. here are a few pics as promised.

Thats some real custom work haha. Looks good, keep it up.

thanks man. i did not want to have the intercooler cut and rewelded because they could screw the intercooler up if they do not know what they are doing. plus i wanted to make it so that all 1g guys can do this in their garage. all i used to do this was a drill, hack saw, tin snips, and the same grinding tool i used to port my 14b...LOL we should all have these tools if we work on cars. i'll keep you guys updated.

Well keep it up man. Also you should consider a quick red touch up paint on the boarder of the frame that you cut. To prevent rain from rusting all that area. Keep us posted like you said :thumb:

91-gsx really gets some rep points from me here, for taking a chance and getting it done, now i too will do it the same way.. awesome show dude... +1

Ya, my buddy is about a week into his ebay fmic install, and nothing has gone right...

(2g btw): Right now, the current problem is the piping does not line up to the fmic endtanks for some odd reason, so he's having somebody do some welding and cutting to finish this up...I wonder if he regrets buying it, but for 295 shipped, it might be worth this hassle...

If a similar kit came out for the 1st gen's (short route), I might look into it...Im hoping to run the stock support tho without cutting, so I wouldn't mind a smaller and thinner core...

Long route would be fine, but I want my foglights to stay...

Kraka, did you friend look at the pictures I posted with my install? It went on perfectly fine, save for having to cut and shorten the LICP. This is easily remedied with a spare silicone coupler, or in your case, welding.

His problem tho, is that when mounted, the endtank pipes that the i/c pipes connect to, those don't line up with the piping...I haven't seen it personally, but he usually knows what he's doing so I decided to trust him on this...We both have not seen this happen before tho...

Either way, somebody's coming over today to help re-weld the kit on, so we'll see how it goes and I'll post pics up for him (no tuners account)..

He also mentioned the fins are very loose and delicate, like if he touched it too hard, they would bend on touch

anyone else noticing this in warm weather?

I'm not going to base mine off of everyone else's but I'm not impressed at all. This thing heatsoaks after a single run. It did fine with cooler temps but now I'm in the 70's/80's the uip gets hot and heatsoaks about as fast as my supra smic did. On a nice cool night, I can run it about 2-3 times before it gets a little warm. But if the temps are warm outside, it's not efficiant at all. I'm running a RS60T @ 21psi with EGT's around 1500 @ WOT. I understand it's a pretty large turbo but I would think with the size of this intercooler it wouldn't have any problems.

sounds like you're pushing more air than most of us with that big daddy turbo. i'm willing to bet it'll be fine for most applications. it does suck that it can't handle your setup though. i'm still interested in hearing if anyone else is having this same problem

toss the core, keep the piping.

That's my plan. I did a boost leak test and it held 22psi without a single leak. Not really sure if mine is defective or what. I'd like to hear others responsd and see if I'm not the only one with this issue. It's a pretty big intercooler which is why my next guess is, crappy core. I am running a 60-1 which is a larger turbo but I've seen numerous people in this thread with 50 trims at higher boost levels. Wondering if it's just my intercooler or if we are all going to have this problem with summer coming up. Any response would be appreciated on this one. Thanks guys.:thumb: Also, with everyone that has this installed, go out and do a WOT run and pull over and check the uip. The reason I even noticed was because I started getting knock with a perfect tune on a 82 deg day. Pulled over thinking I had a boost leak and grabbed the uip. It was so hot I couldn't put my hand over it for more than a second. Went out that night when it was around 55 deg and no knock at all, and the uip was cool even after a couple runs.

it's still only 1 person who has had a problem. that is WAAAAAAAY to early to start jumping to conclusions. let's just wait to see how many more people, if any, have this same problem.

I agree with you. I'd like to hear others respond.:thumb:

I still haven't had any problems yet. I'm running 21psi on my ported FPBigT28, so I know the air coming out is hot.

I haven't gotten to make a full dragstrip pass on it yet though. I should be racing on Saturday though, I'll let you know how it goes.
