led knock light [Merged 2-8]

just hooked mine up too. i have it in a blank below my stereo head unit. as long as you have all the hookups right and the right resistor, your all good. i was a lil nervous too, but it worked great.

I had one. It's pretty worthless, for the most part. It flickers between 3400-4700 (that might not be the exact rpm range) so you stop paying attention to it after a while. I would suggest wiring a switch into it so you can turn it off. That way you can turn it on while you are tuning or racing, and pay attention to it. Otherwise, whenever you are just cruising along on the freeway that damn light is flashing on and off. Totally annoying.

that's the same ohm as what i'm using...still very bright at night...i mounted mine in the empty space under the defrost button...i'm probably going to mount a little toggle switch somewhere under the dash this weekend bc that thing drives me nuts...it flickers from about 2600-4000 rpm's...good luck

Just follow the 2g FAQ, substituting the 1g ECU layout for the 2g layout that the 2g knock LED VFAQ uses. Should be exactly the same (instead of using pin 11 on the 2g ECU, use pin 105 on the 1g layout; just make sure you're using the wastegate solenoid, and you should be cool).

Disclaimer: I don't own a 1g, so YMMV. :D

Just be warned, the knock light is not really a knock light -- you could be knocking before it flashes, and sometimes it'll flash for no reason -- the BCS does not just flicker when there is knock, it'll flicker at certain RPM's, certain loads, etc.

No, the Knock LED that everyone talks about is tapped into the BCS -- it flashes when the ECU sends a 12v charge to the BCS (which at the time would cause the bcs to lower boost)........ that is why it's not accurate.

If you want a knock light, you'll either have to go with an aftermarket knock sensor setup, or a DSMLink (which flashes the check engine light if you get knock)

I have the check engine light mod on my 1G. I rule. Anyway, just get a datalogger. A knock LED will annoy the #@%#@%#@%#@% out of you.

I just installed a knock led with the following parts from radio shack...

The light:
5mm blue LED 3.7 volt / 20ma / 2600mcd

The resistor:
100-Ohm resistor at 1/2 watt / 5% tolerance

When the LED turned on it almost blinded me! Is this the correct size resistor to use inline with the ECU to the LED? What would you recommend? Is it a 12 volt wire that gets tapped in the ECU or what is the voltage rating?

Thanks in advance :thumb:

LEDs either work, or don't. Go back and get one that's not "superbright", or build a housing/cover for it.

Ok thanks, but wont a resister make a difference on the brightness? Yea, I will have to make a cover for it. I can't see the road!!! Thanks Defiant

Going to a larger resistor, to cut the current to it down, will make it dimmer. You could try a potentiometer in there, that would allow you to set it to whatever brightness you wanted. It'd still be a good idea to keep a resistor in there with the potentiometer to limit the max current.

Or, you could be lazy, like me. And when you go to radio shack to get the LED, buy one with the right resistor already built in. I know that radio shack has 12V LEDs, I used a green one for a knock LED a while back. It works just fine, without needing any sort of external resistor.
