Calling it a day another 12.8 lbs removed from the car. A few more small brackets I need to cut out and some more wires to remove on the chassis harness and that will conclude the free candy weight reduction for this season. I’ve seen some people get extreme and cut the sheet metal on the pillars and what not but I’m not going to take it that far.

I’m not a body guy at all my first time drilling spot welds so I’m glad I got it off without screwing it up. I need to prep the surface of the body with some touch up primer and then glue the new carbonetics roof on. I haven’t pulled all the drain tubes from the sunroof yet but so far 22lbs is being saved by swapping the roof. Much more than I was anticipating. Also swapped out the ksports I bought used back in 2012 for some stiffer ones. The build journal has been fun not sure how many more updates I’ll be making though. Cheers

I originally wanted to run the exhaust all the to the rear bumper but after thinking some more on it I decided to end it right before the rear differential. More of a weight thing but after I test it on the road I’ll decide if I need to take it all the way back later on. I’m happy with how it turned out and so much quieter than the side exit at idle. It’s nice to actually hear the engine again. I will end up fabbing another side exit for the strip only. I also finished the roof installation not a hard job just time consuming. I didn’t realize how hard it was to find a 1G windshield but safelite is coming to install that on Wednesday. Feels good to be closing in on driving it again.

Getting closer to track ready. Painted the interior rear because quite frankly it looked like crap the past few years. Got the windshield in let that cure and finally put the rear hatch back on. I’m relieved that it lined up great. The Carbonetics products are all awesome and worth the time and money for sure. I went ahead and scheduled my chassis Cert in a week to give me some extra motivation to go ahead and finish so I can start making some test hits.

Buttoned up a few small things and passed the Sheriffs inspection to get the vehicle titled and registered here in Kansas. So we are officially back on the road legally. Took a quick cruise and everything felt good so now it’s onto hitting the track and start cranking this thing up.

Got my angry aero bumper shutters,

chute handle and cable and put the driveshaft loop on. Next up is the fire suppression system I bought from Ostars drag car part out last year and engine diaper. That will check the block on all the nhra safety rules for the car.

Finally took it to the track for some shakedown passes. A total of 4. Wastegate pressure 34 psi was a 10.1, 37 and 39 were 10.0’s. I was having a heck of a time trying to dial in the forced four smart 100 using the mph with the crappy 1G speed sensor so switched over to rpm up shifts. 40 psi and finally shifting just above 9k on the 1-2 and 2-3 ran a 9.6 at damn near 145mph. Since I switched to qtps I lost some surface area from the full slicks and probably not the greatest track prep but all crap 60fts. Overall I’m very pleased with the outcome after not making a pass in 18 months. I have 1 more test and tune opportunity before IFO in Topeka and then heading down to Tulsa for another IFO.
The cage was certed for 8.5 NHRA so huge relief. Now I just need to work on the short track really just getting the 60ft dialed in. The gen 1 super 99 spool hits peak boost the same exact rpm the hx40 did which was a surprise to me. I’m confident 41 maybe 42 psi will put me where the HX40 was maxed out. 38-40 psi was a 5mph difference in ET so a healthy dose of gains. The turbo is doing exactly what I wanted though that is run just as fast as the hx40 without being pushed to the absolute max. Not going to chase any numbers but an 8.99 this season would be fantastic. Had a ton of fun which as always is the most important thing.

Had a good time at Import Face-Off Topeka. Ended up winning forced induction pro over a awd Honda Crx in the final that missed a shift. The car is moving in the right direction and I’ve been trying different things to figure out this 60ft I just can’t seem to break the 1.5 barrier. At the current power level with a solid low 1.4 or high 1.3 60ft it would be bottom 9s. I’m going to mess with some suspension settings to see if it helps next time out. Next IFO event is in a month at Noble, OK so we’ll see what happens.

I was able to make 3 passes tonight. All steps in the right direction and a new pb is always a plus. My voltage dropped on the 1st pass to bottom 11s by 7k rpm in 1st. I noticed my afrs were on the lean side to me 12.0 so I added some fuel and no change the next pass. Added another 5% still the same. Go to start the car and it wouldn’t turn over battery dead. So I made 3 passes on low battery voltage. Going from a 10.1 to a 9.1 in less than a month is crazy to fathom but I’m getting there. I upped the boost but due to low voltage I only got a few spikes to 47 psi mostly 46 for the runs. Next outing ifo Tulsa,OK at the end of the month.

With not much to do besides go over the car before the race on Sunday I figured it was time to install the carbon fiber doors that have been sitting in the closet since October. The longest part of the process was cutting the optic armor windows and drilling all the holes.

Fitment was great some small adjustments and everything bolted right up.

The Tulsa IFO was an interesting one. Started out with a blown starter fuse in the staging lanes for 1st round of qualifiers. First pass 9.54 crap 60ft 1.68. 2nd qual pass Honda guy was playing games at the stage beam and I pushed through the brakes red lighted. Elimination round 1 against a Supra that was featured at tx2k21 running 8s View attachment 630797View attachment 630798View attachment 630799everything was in order and ran a 8.95. I was not going for it, it happened out of no where. Round 2 eliminations had the same Honda from qual run again he played games I was on the 2 step for almost 5 seconds and the car pushed through the brakes and I red lighted eliminated. That pass felt the fastest the car has ever went but no time to show for it. Car drove back on the trailer on it’s own power so that was a win. Overall successful day disappointed because I was very confident I could beat his pb of 8.83. That’s racing though win some and lose some. I will probably do 2 more test and tunes 1 to get my nhra license and the other to get it dialed in for whatever class I decide to run at the shootout in August. Track prep wasn’t great the 2nd video you can see the car hopping on the launch trying to grip. If I can get a 1.3s 60ft should get me closer to my 8.5 threshold cage limited.View attachment 630800

The day after Tulsa I came to the conclusion the super 99 was maxed out. I could not make more than 49 psi without spraying and then it would hit 53 psi. I literally pulled the turbo off in the trailer and it’s been sitting since. In my case the gen 1 super 99 was a bust compared to the old hx40 given all the weight reductions I’ve done since running the turbo. I placed an order for a Xona but after a few check in’s with FP it became clear the pandemic has made a huge delay for them on turbine wheels. I placed the order 1st week of June and a few weeks ago they said I’d be looking around October and that has since been pushed further out. After much research and not being able to justify the $4k price tag for a pte I decided to give Comp a try. They seemed very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. The turbo showed up and it’s much lighter and seems to be made of high quality. The compressor wheel is way taller than the super 99 compressor wheel it’s comes in at 102x72mm. The turbine wheel is also a huge upgrade over the super 99 coming in at 82x75mm, the super 99 was 75x65mm. I truly believe this was the problem in my case but I’m not logging back pressure just looking at the fact it took spray to produce more boost. Not many post after 2012 of guys running comp but prior to that it was mostly negative. I searched a lot of forums and to much surprise there are actually a lot of legit pro mod cars running comps and not having any issues for the past few years. My philosophy is this turbo is either going to hold what I throw which will be 50-60 psi or it’s going to blow. I will be able to make the shootout and that will likely be the first test hit.

I’m curious why you didn’t go with the bigger turbine housing (1.15 divided)?

Any feedback on the new turbo yet?

I part of me wanted to go with the 1.15 but the guys at comp advised me to go with the 1.0 so I’m giving it a shot. Made a last minute decision to drive down to Wichita and make a few test hits before the shootout. It was 100* no lie and da was 4500ft insane. I made 2 hits the turbo survived. 1st pass was 10.16@141, 2nd hit 9.96@146. I took out 2* of timing from the entire map and had to add 13% of fuel from 6k up so it is definitely flowing more. The crap times were because my super weak 1.6s 60ft. Wastegate duty cycle is 45% compared to the super 99 at 100% with 100 shot of now. I had the nitro 50 shot shut off at 20mph and let the turbo do the work. The 146mph pass was on 49 psi keep in mind insane temps and da compared to 1500 2 months ago on the 8.9 pass. I bought a vacuum canister I need to hook up so I can raise this launch rpm to at least 4500 to get me out of the hole. Turbo is still alive and tight, no oil blowing etc.

The deadly combinations is killing your ET/MPH.
I would guess mid 8s with your current boost level no problem. Hope you make it to the SO.

I’ll be there for sure. The biggest change was going to 7% transfer gears. It was a huge gamble and only one way to find out by trying it. I would say that’s the biggest hurdle on short track. It’s gaining 30mph + on the back half so making some jam. Hopefully raising the launch rpm will get me back to where I need to be.

I ran mine to the rear bumper. 4" aluminum from down pipe back it was quite difficult getting around the rear axles and it ended up being extremely loud. We made the the muffler from 5" and a 4" perforated on the inside with glass packing. Still was extremely loud and tends to turn into a conversation piece when people notice it.

The shootout was an awesome experience. I met some of you on here and it was a pleasure. The Morrison’s asked me if I wanted to display my car Friday at Buschurs next to there booth and I was so honored to do that. My car only fit 2 classes quick 32 or turn the car down and run 9.5 after giving it some thought I decided to try and win some money back to cover traveling cost. I took out an additional 2* of timing and lowered wastegate duty to 28%, and tried like hell to keep the 60ft very conservative. That lead to a 9.3@151. For whatever reason that was as slow as I could make it go which is crazy compared to the 2 test passes prior to the event I guess the air and track conditions had to play a part in that. I had to hit the brakes so I didn’t break out after that and it was a giant guessing game but we qualified #1 by the seat of my pants. Everything was going great going rounds advancing and unfortunately the turbo shaft snapped in the semi finals right after the 1000ft mark. I looked through all the data and I can’t find anything out of the norm, egts good, afrs solid, oil pressure (not logging at turbo feed), fuel pressure etc. so the turbo made a total of 12 passes. I’m going to send it back to comp for analysis and see what they say. Overall though the turbo is a beast and I’m really curious to what it will do turned up not hitting the brakes. In current form with a good 1.3 60ft this thing will do 8’s on the really turned down tune. Time will tell In a month or 2 I will get back to the track and hopefully back this 8 second pass up.
