Key made via VIN?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

The dealership.. You'll probably need more than just a VIN. I can't think of any website that would be so stupid to make keys off a VIN.

Average cost? Is there a Transponder in this year key? I've also seen some stock alarm remotes too on eBay, I assume that can be programmed once in the car.

I had it done. I had to bring proof like it says above. I bought my title and lisence. Took 3min and maybe 11 or 17 bucks... can't remember

There's no immobilizer in DSMs (to my knowledge), they're dumb keys. And remotes won't work until they've been programmed via ETACS.

Excellent replies guys. Can I just disable the alarm once I am in since I know it's going to set it off once I open the door. I know I can disconnect the battery but will it sound off once the battery is re-connected? If so, what's the procedure to just disable it while I figure out how to replace the Remote. Or can the Dealer do this too?

While I can't comment on this with my DSM as it doesn't have the stock alarm, I do know a Jeep I had with a stock alarm had switches at each tumbler which would disable the alarm if you unlocked the door with the key. If you do unlock it and it goes off try going to the passenger door and use the key to unlock it(disarm the alarm) as an issue I had in the Jeep was the driver side switch was bad.

you can also call insurance and they will send a locksmith to your house and do it right in your diveway

Ahh, could be true. I just have to pick the right door since I do remember one of the doors that little sensor broke it's holding tabs so I just taped it to the door.

50% right?

I only put liability on this car since I paid it off a few years back. Does AAA have this service? If so, I never use it so why not in this case?

im not sure it might be AAA all i know is my friend lost his keys 2twice within a week first time we went to the dealer and then he went though the insurance..... and all you need really is a vin but they would want proof of owner ship to.. but to answer your question i would belive it would be considered roadside you would have to check on that though

Gonna stop by the Dealer tomorrow after work about the Key. I will also inquire about the Remote.

I'll post back with my outcome

Update. Went to the Dealer and a Title is NOT good enough. I even told him the Registration is in the locked car. He said this is the only way he can cut a key via a VIN.

So AAA is one their way to open the car, so I can get my Registration and take to the Dealer.

Also, my AAA will cover up to $100 of the key cost.

Just got back from the dealer. Key made and Code given. All good. I reconnected the battery and alarm didn't sound off anymore. Probably because I was breaking in the key in the door lock. Thanks for the help everyone!

if you remove the passanger side door lock it has the basic #'s to get a key cut.

.i know this cause i bought my dsm without one..i removed the doorlock took it to a good master key cutting place and 15mins later and 24bucks i had new keys.
the best part was the guys that sold me the car was joking with his buddys about how i'll never get that shit pile going.and good luck getting a key made. cuase i bought it with out a title

jokes like junkard is that way kinda crap..
well JOKE on them cause.:tease: i smoked his lilcrustang gt last night at the track.
HE WON'T EVEN SPEAK TO ME... i have know clue why.
haha beat me to it ..have fun with your ride

Yes, bring proof of ownership and personal identification.

Why is this thread still going. Did you see my response? It's from experience. Your alarm has nothing to do with the freaking key.

Just to follow up on this response. Not all Dealers will work with just a Title (Proof of Ownership). Matter of fact, the Dealer told me that no Mitsubishi Dealer can do this with just Proof of Ownership because even with a Title, there could be another "Registered Person."

Bring your Registration Card and Picture ID (Drivers License) to the Mitsubishi Dealer. Key cost me $7 :hellyeah:

I also bought a used Remote from eBay complete with Programming Instructions. Works like a charm. Got new Keys with Code and Remote again. I'm a Happy Camper.

I need to do this. A laser is too old for the dealer to cut via VIN.
