After a longs day of work, a co-worker asked for a lift home. Begging for so boostin' action, I rip him a WOT 2nd gear pull. This is when...

KABOOM! I look in the rear view and I see a massive brown/black cloud of smoke. Look back at the tachometer, by this time I'm full clutch in, she's reving at 1,000RPMs steady. I come to a stop, put the handbrake on and look under the car. Nothing is leaking nor does anything smell off.

Start moving again in 1st... and it's like nothing happened. I drop my buddy off and head to my house. On my street I give it some throttle. I noticed it wouldn't build past 5ish PSI.

It's already dark at this point and I will deal with it later, tomorrow that is.

My theory, the kaboom came from the front and I blew something between the turbo cold side and manifold (some place that builds boost). Ridiculous increase in airflow, called for intense InjectorDutyCycle ----> I hit fuel cut. Result? Big black cloud.

What is buggin' me is that I don't run a speed density setup so how can my car Idle fine? When I tuned my base settings I was ready 0.26g/rev of airflow and 37-40hz MAF. Knowing it's a boost leak it should be a simple fact of starting link and checking for Idle measurements right?

Sorry guys, like I said, it's to dark out right now not to mention freezing. Just pondering out loud. Any ideas on your side? Or does it sound spot on?

*EDIT* KABOOM sound came from the front, 100% positive.

Sounds to me like one of your intercooler pipes blew off the coupler causing a loud pop. But it also sounds like you didnt blow it off completely since you said you couldnt build anything past 5psi...maybe you tore a coupler? Check them all out when you can.

Exactly what I am thinking and just like you, the steady Idle is what really get me thinking! Can't wait for tomorrow to come :)

Do a boost leak test and check to see if your turbo went out on you.

Wouldn't I be blowing smoke?

I finally got round to making a boost leak tester (Surprised how easy and little time it took to make fabricate one of this things not to mention they work like a charm!).

I started at the throttle body elbow. Both throttle body gaskets are leaking. Going to spray down my injector o-rings with soapy water to. What else should I spray in that region?

Thanks.

Spray everything!! Your manifold could be cracked, not likely but could be. Soapy water won't hurt anything so just spray your heart out and check every little square inch :D

Thanks. I'll get right back to it! And also, I called two diffrent auto stores and both say my TB gasket is back order. WTF

Not to mention, one of them told me to call the Eagle dealer... right...

I hate where I live...

I can't seem to find any more leaks with the soap but I defiantly hear a huge rush of air somewhere around the throttle body... I just can't pin point it.

*UPDATE 1*

When I make WOT with my hand, I hear it A LOT of air leak on the spring side, and when it is closed, I hear it a lot on the right side. Ideas?

*UPDATE 2*

Called 5 auto part stores and all of them said their warehouses across Canada don't have stock ... seriously? WTF

Try https://www.rtmracing.com/xcart/home.php?cat=276 Ziggy always has stock, and it's in Ontario.

Is it possible that one of the vac ports on your intake manifold is gushing out air? Perhaps one of the vac hoses popped off there, that would be in the general area that you are saying that you can hear a lot of air from.

Is your crank at TDC when your doing the boost leak test?
It can be leaking out the intake valves threw and out the exhaust valves if its not at TDC.

Just be aware. The throttle body isn't the easiest thing to take apart. Putting it back together is no problem. It's taking of the butterfly plate screws that had me ragin'.

yep yep. I had to dremel the peened over ends, then used my 18v impact and high high pressure on the head to break them loose and get them out. If you strip the heads you will hate your life.

Don't bother with extremePSI. Nothing wrong with them, but the border is the obstacle. Just go with Ziggy at RTMRacing. Good guy, active in the community and pretty much the only source in Canada for all the little bits and pieces for our cars.

that does sound like throttle body shaft seals - could be wrong, but all these throttle bodies are more than at the age to need a rebuild if they have not already been.

I have rebuilt mine - honestly next time I would look at getting one from any of the people out there offering rebuilts ### it is finicky work and you never know if you have done it right until you put it back in. You also have the option of some mods for improvements with some of the rebuilders (such dsmthrottlebodies.com).

ExtremePSI wants 70$ shipping via UPS ... ye, ok? For gaskets...

You're smoking crack if you are talking about TB gaskets. They should be like $4-$5 each max, and ExtremePSI charges about $7 for S&H IIRC.

If it costs $55 more to ship two little paper gaskets to Canada, you may want to consider moving south across the border. :)

5.50 for the gasket...
66 for the shipping... oohh yeaa
