So i brought my car into Mitsbushi to figure out what the hell was wrong with it. So they did some tests and found out i have bent intake valves. So im pretty much screwed. They said it would be 2600 for just the top cylinder head overhaul. or 5000 for a remanufactured motor. I dont know what to do. And right now i cant find any DSM's for sale in that price range. I dont want to part with my DSM.

F that. If I were you, I would learn how to rebuild a head. It's a useful skill, and it's not like you're going to mess anything up, it's already broken =)

Buy a $500 beater and slowly bring your car back to life.

Are the pistons messed up? If not im sure if you look around in the classifieds you can find a good used head for alot cheaper then 2600. Do the work yourself and i think max maybe 300 - 400 dollars.

For a non-turbo that is a bit outragous. But then again you did take it to a dealer. If one valve is bent they techincally have to replace all of them. I would pay them for the diagnosis and take it to a private shop or find a friend and do it yourself. Dealerships have to do a lot of machine work and replace everything when one thing goes wrong. A private shop will just replace what is broken and nothing else. I would recommend doing it yourself. Will cost maybe $500 when you are all said and done plus gain some knowledge.

Absolutely. This is great advice -- listen to this guy :thumb:

Ya I would defently get it out of the dealer. $2600 is crazy if they want that just to rebuild a head. You can get a fully built turbo head for like $1000 less. I would look for a good used head and swap it yourself or take it to someone else. Or do some calling around to different shops and see how much the would charge for a rebuild & install if your not comfortable doing it yourself. Im really starting to think that I will never take my car to Mitsu if I did have a problem, some other guy on here was quoted $1800 for a new t25 turbo & install, thats just insane

I think i wanna call around. But if i can get the money i wanna just trade it in and get a 2g or something else. I'm just getting sick of it, ya know? It's one problem after another. DSMs are pretty damn stressful.

Dude. Dealerships are ridiculous! I would just get a used, good shape head, for around $300 and throw that on. They're pretty easy to fine. Then either rebuild your head and sell it or just sell it the way it is.

Don't stress. You could find a built head in the classifieds or ebay for cheap. Buy it and just do the install. Alot cheaper and surely recommended over a new car!

when you get a 2g you are looking at crankwalk to bro just stick with what you got if your lucky and have the 6bolt i had 3 n/t's and they have the same headaches you would run into with any dohc motor, just lil harder to do if you aint used to it and yes dont ever take a car to a dealer they will charge you out the wazoo, unless you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself and none of the shops around have experience with dsm's. just buy a good head and the dealer should still be willing to do the work for ya and you would be looking at alot less, but i would go for the knowledge side of it.

for reference if you do it yourself I'll tell you what it cost me. I also had all bent intake valves. I pulled the head and got it roconditioned for $320(all new intake valves and guides, new seals all the way around). I put all new timing belt parts and water pump for another $330. That inlcuded tensioner arm, tensioner, all pulleys etc.

So $650 and back on the road again.

Another well informed soul... :toobad:

Do the headwork yourself if you can get someone to help you. It would be a great experience.

Hey if you are going to have to deal with the DSM curse you might as well have a turbo.
Even if you get it fixed a n/t 1g wont get you that much. How much do you have saved up?

Sorry to hear, first of like everyone else says, taking your car to the dealership will hurt your wallet. There are several ways you can go about it, depending on how mechanically inclined you are about with cars in general. Everyone pretty much hit one of these aspects in replying to your posts. The prices do vary, I know shops who will clean, do a 3 angle valve job and R & R the spring, valves, seals, retainers, valve guides between $200-$400, depending on whom you take it to. Of course this is local to my area (Maryland), but I am sure there should be places around your way that can match this.

Another one would be buying a reman head as others said, this can vary in price. Search the classifieds, if not go to www.car-parts.com. Its a listing of salvage yards nation wide and they all advertise the parts the currently have in stock, most prices are very decent. I've used them a lot and due recommend this site as an alternative parts finder.

Also, Newlogics posted a great post with prices for the heads. You should check those out too.

Well hope this helps and let us know which way you decide to go. There is ton of help on this forum as long as you know how to ask and search for it.

Good luck.

Ya, thats a rediculous price, you could find a nice 2G for $5000, just get yourself a Haynes manual, and gather all the tools you'll need to swap out your head, and go at it yourself, it shouldnt be too bad, good learning experience, just take your time and do it by the book and you'll be rewarded. Hey, look at it this way, if you get stuck you could always post here, you know you'll get the help you need. Good luck with what you decide.

just rebuild your head yourself. Go to the junkyard and get a head from a NA (same valves) make sure its not bent. Relap the valve with lapping compound. Replace the valve stem also. Or you can get the head rebuilt. A shop will charge you from 120 to 200 to rebuild, which include hot tank, deck, valve job.

when i purchased my 96 ESI (DD) it had thrown the t-belt bent all the exhaust valves. I bought new valves from ebay for 60$ installed them myself, had the head decked for 30$, gasket for 40$. Total = 130$...

Never Never Never let somebody else do work that you can do yourself. This is the type of problem that DSMTuners and a good Chiltons manual can get you through. This is how we all learned to work on cars, they break and we fix them ourselves cause its cheaper. If you're lucky it won't become an obsession like it has for a lot of us. Cheers!

Get your car out of the dealership ASAP. The prices they are quoting you are outragous. Find a dsmer' or a dsm shop that will do it for a fraction of the price.. You live in ohio.
I got a brand new head, timing belt, side cover, etc etc etc.. all for $700 installed.

Yea even tho many people have already said it, id do it my self..i did it not to long ago i had it out and back in, in a day...not to difficult, just those damn intake manifold bolts, their a bi*** to get to...i bought new cams, valves, and springs and only paid about 700 bux..

Haha, thats crazy how many replys this post got. Just to give you guys an update, I'm still considering just getting a new motor. I could rebuild the head, but then i have to consider i have 200,000 miles on the rest of the motor. So I'm just gonna disclude rebuilding the head. I wanna try to get a new motor. Im looking around at engine exchanges and other places to see what prices i can get. But im also thinking about trading it in for a 2g. I know about the crankwalk thing, but im just trying to get different options. The guys at mitsubishi have been really cool to me so far with pricing. I'm trying to see if i can talk them down on the motor. It's fully rebuilt with a 3 year warranty.

Do any of you guys know other good places i could find a motor?

By the way thanks for all the replies and feedback.
