just bought a GSX and i need help

ok well i just bought i 96 gsx and theres a punched a hole through the block, apparently the pin connecting the rod to the piston gave out.
so i need help on what to do, and how to fix it.
im not really engine savvy so can someone assist me please! :]

Ouch. Was the hole in the block BEFORE or AFTER you bought the car? My vote if for the 6-bolt as well. Research.
 
Do some reading in the forums (by searching) and you will run across many others who have had similar problems with their cars. They probably didn't buy them that way but that doesn't change that they need to be repaired.

First of all we need to know what your goals are. Is the car going to be a daily driver that you want to be extremely reliable? Or do you want to make some power and build the block to handle quite a bit. A stock block can handle lots of power when tuned correctly, but if you are going to take the time and money to do it, you might as well do it right.

I had a machine shop do all of the machine work on my block. I bought Eagle rods and Wiseco pistons and my friends and I assembled the block ourselves. Make sure you have a reliable, knowledgeable helper doing this if you decide to take this on by yourself. I'm sure you know that this is by no means a novice task.

I'm curious though as to how much you paid for this vehicle, and if you knew of how extensive the rebuild process would be? It sounds like you bought this vehicle uninformed or mislead. So I want to know if you understand that this is not an easy undertaking. Let us know if you have any questions.

I do wish you the best of luck. Don't give up no matter what! My car is currently having tuning issues and it has eaten lots of my money. That is part of owning a DSM!

thanks for the feed back but i knew what was wrong with it, all i knew is that i could fix it by replacing the block, so in other words just a new block right?
well i got it for 1400 and everything else is good to my knowledge
 
yeah your gonna need a new block for sure.
its up to you if you want a built 6 bolt block, stock 6b or 7 bolt block, or even an entire engine.
 
the easiest would just be to buy a 7 bolt block.
but since they cost around the same, and since your gonna have to do all the work anyways,
if your up for a little bit more work go for the 6 bolt.
its generally more reliable and stronger.
 
its really up to you, and what you want out of the car.
and if swapping the 6 bolt is worth it for you.

but for most of the community it would be worth it.
and will cost a little bit more, and more time and work.

you can find them if you look around,
for a stock block i would guess from 200 to 500 maybe? just a guess.

since your old block is toast I would use your 7 bolt head with the 6 bolt block. I feel its the best of both worlds for reliability and its cost effective in your case since you already have the head, you now just need the bottom end.


....and time, lots of time
 
Looks like its time to put you a mildly build block and a ported and polished and cam'd up head unless you have the cash and dont care to build that thing and be done with it...

And sometimes on ebay. BUT your better off just buying them from here. Just check their feedback so you dont get scammed.

I would agree that this might be your best bet. Keep searching and looking around. Keep your eyes open and you will find a good deal eventually.

To answer your question though, you will need the block and the internals of the block. New pistons and rods. The cheapest way to go would probably be to get 1G rods, and 2G pistons. That is known to be the strongest combo utilizing stock components. The 1G rods are stronger than the 2G rods. And the 2G pistons are better than the 1G pistons.

This combination has been proven time and time again to handle 450 horsepower or more. And it will still be easy on your wallet.
 
A 7 bolt will be the easiest and cheapest solution, but no matter what you always run the risk of the dreaded crankwalk. A 6 bolt shortblock may cost a little extra for the swap, but in the end you have a more reliable motor. The 7 bolt head bolts up to the 6 bolt block, but you may have to drill out the head stud holes slightly to get it to sit on the block.

Many vendors sell pre-built shortblocks ranging from all OEM parts to race motors. Honestly, if you haven't done this before, I'd buy a shortblock from a reputable vendor NEW, and have a reputable shop do the swap. There are TONS of things that can go wrong while doing this yourself. I should know, my 6 bolt swap is going on the 1 year mark and about $4k deep in repairs and replacements of things I've either broken during the process or just found to be in poor condition.

I would do a full 6 bolt swap. As just mentioned you WILL have to drill the head for the larger studs. The 6 bolt head has larger ports, and you can use the large IM and TB. This is what I'm doing right now myself. I'm assembling the bottom end right now. Good luck with everything.
 
didn't Mitsubishi do something to the 99 blocks to lessen the chances of crankwalk, or has it been that long since I have dealt with these cars because back when I owned my 98 GST (2004) I could have swore people were talking about the 99 blocks being less prone to CW?
 
Crankwalk = over rated IMHO

I see people on here all the time blame crankwalk. Just last week some kid said his car walked on him when in fact he drove it for 4 days with no oil...Ka-Bloom!

I agree to man I have a six bolt sitting in my garage and the only reason it is there is because it was given to me I seriously have no plans on building it maybe stealin the rods out of it but thats it...
