im new to dsms and turbo cars. i just bought a 92 gsx completely stock. the guy i bought it from said it just needed a new ecu and i got one but its still giving me problems. it idles funny like it doesn't want to keep running and white smoke shoots out the exhaust constantly. once i replaced the ecu it gave more power but after a couple blocks of driving it died and wont start back up, im not sure if its burning to much fuel or what. can anyone help me out?

with my experience with my 92 talon, is if it does not fire up make sure your getting fuel, check to see if your timing is in line. alot of times the timing is a major problem with these cars, so i have been told. and it sounds more like the dude sold you a car with a blown head gasket, if thats the case then it makes sence why it wont start ### the pressure you need would be lost from the leaking HG, and the white smoke out the tail pipe.. take the feed line off of the fuel rail, its a 10 ml. i believe and put the key to the on position, the fuel should come out. check to see if you have spark, pull your plugs and check them out it might help, look for leaks where the head meets the block. let me know if it helps

Also do a compression test or a leakdown test. Make sure you have spark, fuel, and compression and go from there.

+1 on the timing. check the timing marks. My 2g kinda did the same thing. Ran fine until one day i started it and ran like shit. It was just the timing.

+1 on the compression test. No start could be the fuel pump. I wouldnt just pull the fuel line to check for pressure it will spray fuel everywhere. Pull the fuel pump relay, crank the car over for 10-20 sec. to depressurize the fuel system go loan a fuel pressure tester from auto zone hook it up replace the relay and see if you get pressure and how much if you do. Are you sure the new ECU is still ok?

As people have said, a compression check is a must. White smoke out the exhaust sounds like it could be a blown headgasket, but it can be difficult to tell sometimes.

You said that you had to replace the ECU, did you make sure that the ECU you bought was gone through and had the capacitors replaced. Old ECU's can have leaky capacitors that will cause funny engine problems. If you open up your ECU and it smells like old fish then you need to get the capacitors replaced.

Also, as other have said check that your fuel pump is working correctly.

Oh and if you don't have one already, get a Hanes manual at an Autozone. It can help a lot with diagnosing problems.

Good luck!

Why does everyone assume its a HG?
White smoke is also a sign of a blown turbo. Although that wouldnt explain for why the car wont start, there could be a number of other problems. People think all problems are linked together. Think outside the box. Fuel pump, injectors, plugs ect ect hell it could be something as simple as the battery or something thats commonly looked over. Why attack the more expensive parts? Start with the little stuff so you dont blow money on things that arnt necessary.
Good luck,
Taran

ya, the battery was the first thing i changed out. there also is a vacuum hose that isn't connected, i looked every where it might hook up and cant find it. you think that might be the cause of some of the problems? im ganna try to get some pictures on here so you can see what im talking about.

Welcome to Tuners! A vacume leak could diff give problems startin but blowin white smoke is a sign of blown head gasket. even with a blown head gasket and if your compression is low the car should still start. if the car has a lot of miles on it it probably needs to be rebuilt cause everyone beats the piss out of turbo motors. most of the people I know with 4g63t motors in there dsms have already rebuilt them before they hit 150k. First compression test then leak down test. good luck to ya.

well the guy said it only has 200 miles on the engine and the car itself only has 125xxx. im ganna get a better gasket set this week end. but my problem is finding where that dang hose connects haha. i wish i could post a pic right now so you could see. the car was also sitting for six months not being doven so i dunno if theres anything that could have rusted up or what

Madmax couldn't post some pictures of the connections so I am. In one of the pictures at the end of the fuel rail there's a hose that Ts off and is not connected to anything

OK so one of my friends told me the reason my car might not be firing up is cause the engine may have gotten flooded and something to do with the spark plugs. i took one of the spark plugs out and it was black and smelled like fuel. if i get new spark plugs would that fix the firing up problem? :hmm:

by the way the top picture that hurricanecris24 posted is the vacuum hose that isn't connected to anything. and the other two pictures are the plug inns with the purple coloring, are plug inns that i don't know if they plug in to anything or if there supposed to be like that? im stumped....can anyone help? thanks.

That connector is probably for the fuel pump test or something. Two pin connectors on the DSM wiring harness are (from what I can remember) for the reverse light and the knock sensor.

The power/ground CAS and coil pack are all with connectors with 3 or more pins.

When it comes to getting the car to turn on, don't worry about that small connector. Especially if the car ran somewhat alright without you messing with anything under the hood.

Chances are it is something simple, As I have stated in other posts, mitsubishi's have excellent electrical systems with the exception of the capacitor issue.

Just because you swapped ECU's doesnt mean that the ECU you are using is any good.

Swap the old ECU back in, tell us what happens.

Also: the poor idle is a whole different issue, message me for instructions on how to troubleshoot it.

This may be frustrating, but this learning experience will only make you stronger.

That plug by the batterie is to ground the computer to set your base timing it normally has a cap on it doesnt plug into anything. Thats the vacuum line that goes to the fuel pressure regulator with it leaking like that it is why you are running rich. Plug the open side of the T. I'm not sure about the other plug.

If the car has not run the timing belt does loosen up a bit but it doesnt hurt to check the timing. The plug by the propotioning valve on the fire wall looks like it could be the knock sensor connection.

Normally that's not there. My guess is it was added for an aftermarket boost gauge but that's not the right place. It should have been on the intake manifold side of the FPR solenoid and the FPR side.

That's the timing adjust terminal. You ground it when adjusting the Cam Angle Sensor. http://members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Engineprimer/1G/timingconn.htm

That's the connector for the EGR temp sensor used on California cars or the knock sensor connector. From the wire colors I think it for the knock sensor but I really can't tell from that picture.

okay so we are still trying to think whats wrong with it. im getting the ecu tested to see if thats the problem. we started up the car and it smokes and when i put my hand by the exhaust tip my hand gets wet with gas and smells like gas. i pulled the spark plugs there pitch black the smell like pure gas.
