i tried to searched but couldnt find what i was looking for.

i came across an incredible deal on a AWD dsm this weekend while nopi was in town. it has the jdm tranny and it wont go anywhere with the stock rear differential. some of you may know what im referring to and those who do, can anyone explain to me why the two wont work together? and what is needed to make the two work? (parts and prices if you know them)
thanks

It could be that the gear ratios are different in the differentials. It depends on what jdm tranny you are talking about. There are 2 different gear ratios for the jdm transmissions: 3.9:1 and 3.545:1. You need to find out which gears it has in the front and rear diffs. If the gears dont match and the car is driven then the center diff will be fried.

I'm just going to throw this out also, make sure the case of the tranny is the same as the case in your car. I ended up buying a JDM tranny and although they looked similar on the outside the case number was different. I looked up the number and it ended up coming off of a Galant AWD (NT). It bolted up fine but you couldn't get the clutch to disengage completely no matter how much you adjusted it. The gear ratio's were also different so the rear tires were spinning faster than the front tires.

I have the list of mitsubishi trannys somewhere. If I find the list I'll post it.

Oh, and if the gear ratio's are different the tranny is really no good to you.

need to talk to the guy selling the car to get some more info to put on here. i dont think thats the problem he had this transmission shipped over here from japan, i think. again i need to talk to him more about it. i dont think thats the problem. he told me i would need to buy a jdm rear differential. but i have recently heard on here to change out something in the transmission, but i dont know what?
thanks anyways

I have a F5M31 in my car and I used old parts from a F5m33 to make it 3.545.I used the diff and the shaft that the diff connects to at the gears. Can't remember what the shaft is called. This tranny was intended for a 1.8 awd sohc motor.Does 85 @ 5500 rpms in 5th.

those gears seem to short for what i would want. what im thinking of is gearing it like the us models. i saw it somewhere on here but i cant find it.

Grab the output shaft and turn it, check how many output shaft turns it takes for the front diff to rotate one full turn.

If it's just under 4 (3.866 exact) than you are fine and this tranny will work on your car, if it's just over 4 (4.26 exact) than it won't work without swapping center diff and output shaft gear set.

As for 1-5 gears just compare it to VFAQ unless it's W5M31 than it won't be listed.

the tranny is on a car im loking at buying and i know for a fact that the tranny wont run in the car. i need to know what parts are needed for it to work.

What do you mean "it won't run"? Even if the gears are wrong everything will still spin, just at the wrong speeds. That won't bind anything up.

There is no rear diff in the transmission. Only a front and a center diff.

The output shaft is for the center diff. It won't neccesarily equate to front diff rotation.

It doesn't sound to me like gear ratios are the issue. Something else in the tranny is messed up and causing problems.

i dont exactly know what is wrong its not my car. the guy told me that the rear wheels will lock up when you start to drive the car. he also told me that if i found a jdm rear end that the car would run fine. i dont like the idea of only being able to do 100 mph with suck low gears. there is a way to change something out in the transmission to be able to work. the final drive ratio or some thing like that is different. i talked to john shepard a week ago when NOPI was in bristol, he told me to change something out in the transmission and it will be fine. i cant remember what he said though. and i know someone on here must know.
again its not my car and i cant get ahold of the guy to ask more questions. when i talk to him i will post more but for now i cant.
sorry if im confusing anyone but this is all i know.
