Is wrenching a DSM easy?

Overall, i think working on a DSM is pretty damn easy. They seem to have put some thought into the design of the car overall, as wrenching on a DSM is usually smooth and "curse less".

What do you guys think?

I have scars on my hands that say otherwise.
Are you sure they're from working on cars? :D

OP, you have a 1G so you'll get to perform the most PITA job, pulling, welding and reinstalling the clutch pedal assembly. Do not attempt this job if you're over 40. :)

My Talon has turned me into a self taught Mechanic. All my friends come to me with car troubles. Overall DSM's are easy to work with, aside from the rear motormount on a 2G LOL. Still dont know a daym thing about the 2GNT in my driveway.

Another thing thats a pita is changing the wiring harness since you have to remove the dash:cry:

everything in there is a 10 12 or 14 i have a set and those are the only ones i have used the hole time i have had the car. easy to work on hmm... well that depends on what your doing i have yet to drop the transmission and don't plan to.

yeah. They're too damn heavy and the engine bays are cluttered. Parts are much more expensive and hard to come by for the 3kgt

I've had at least 4 DSM's, and I must say....I dread doing timing belts and I SUPER dread doing clutches on all wheel drives. The timing belt isn't too too hard......it's just that when I get everything all set up to go in.....I have a very hard time getting the belt that 1/10000000000000000th of an inch past the tensioner pulley. As for the clutch......I just hate doing them by myself. It seems like the tranny is a perfect fit between the control arm, and I just can't find that perfect fit.

Having owned and worked on both DSMs and TT 3/Ss, I can't say there is much of a difference. It is still wrenching, taking stuff off, remembering where it goes, and putting it back on. They are V6, TWIN turbo; one would think this would obviously make things 'more cluttered'.

I have expressed my fair amount of swearing while working on DSMs. Things do move more smoothly now that I know a bit more of what I'm doing.

Wrenching on a DSM is easy when your home. Try diagnosing them at work under flat rate. The pay scale on these cars is complete BS.

I used to own a 91 Laser. I have never used so much oxygen and acetylene while working on a car in my life. The tow guy knew me by name, and where my garage was. Every bolt and screw on that car was rusted over, and there is almost no room on the belt side of the motor. I didn't like working on it.

On the other hand, my 2gnt is a breeze to work on, has never broken down on me, and the torch is covered in dust.

Depends if you have little girl hands or big ol bear paws.
Like someone mentioned, in certain areas, it gets really cramped such as the timing and drivetrain...

These cars have a lot of of stuff going on, compared to a truck of the same year, I would say the DSM is complicated. Putting a timing belt on for the first time would be a chore.. Turbos, AWD, DOHC, has its disadvantages, but at the same time Its a step above the normal V8 RWD. And I've never done a whole prodject where I havent broken a rusty bolt, even when I PB Blaster the SOB. But there worth every minute.

I've been under my damn dash running wires for ECU's, WB, Gauges, stereo, clutch adjustment, etc.... I swear there is a little voice up under there that laughs at me everytime he hears the driver's seat slamming all the way back. :)

Anything under the dash SUCKS. But then again, I'm almost 40 :D

I would say that these cars would be moderately hard to work on. Some tasks are harder than others. If you work on alot of Hondas you will cuss this car to no end. Try putting a 6 bolt engine in an automatic 2g and tell me about the space on the timing belt side :( I will gladly work on a DSM rather than a Ford or 80-2000 year Dodge (No offense to Ford lovers but they always seem to get the best of me)

what happens to the clutch pedal assembly, for all this work to be performed?

No problem.

BTW you might want to get a new keyboard, your shift key doesn't seem to be functioning. ;)
