I bought a 1992 gsx and the guy said it had a 16g. I didnt know if i could trust him so i looked it up. my turbo says tdo5h, what could i find that would prove to me that it is a 16g or 14b. This is the chart i found to help me.

TDO4-9B-6CM2 265 CFM TDO5H-14G-8CM2 465 CFM
TDO5-12A-8CM2 320 CFM TDO5H-16G-7CM2 505 CFM
TDO4-13G-5CM2 360 CFM TDO5H-16G-10CM2 505 CFM
TEO4-13C-6CM2 360 CFM TDO6-17C-8CM2 550 CFM
TDO4L-13G-6CM2 360 CFM TDO6H-20G-14CM2 650 CFM
TDO4L-15C-8.5CM2 390 CFM TDO7S-25G-17CM2 850 CFM
TDO5H-14B-6CM2 405 CFM TFO8L-30V-18CM2 1200 CFM

Uh huh... how about copying down some of the other numbers on the compressor housing. That should give a better indication as to whether or not the turbo is a 16G. TDO5H can designate any of a number of turbos (14Bs, 16Gs, etc.).

Even if the stamped serial number indicates that you have a 16G, there is still a chance that you have 14B because the compressor housings are interchangeable. Take a few pictures of the turbo, and the compressor side fan blades so we can make an accurate assessment.

both the 14B and 16G have TD05H cast into the compressor housing. Pull the MAF hose off of the turbo, and look at the fins of the compressor wheel. The 14B has all of the fins at the same height, where as the 16G fins alternates one tall and the one next to it shorter then tall and the next one short and so forth.
here's an example.

the 14B wheel is on the left, the 16G on the right

it might be a little hard to see though in the engine bay compartment. the first time I did this I could barely see the fins. I double checked by feeling with the tip of my finger.

^Like he said, check the fins. Its easy to see the difference.

On a side note, and not to thread hijack... but look at this

TDO5H-16G-10CM2 505 CFM

Does MHI make 10cm2 TDO5H exhaust housings? Can I get one and put it on my Evo III?

The Hahn Super Turbos use a 10cm housings out of the box. Talk about slow spool characteristics, but at least you know the thing won't creep.

Yes, but it's a divided flow housing and looks nothing like our current ones. You could spot an EVO 9 turbo from a mile away.

It should say 05200 as the last part of the number on the turbo for small16g .Big 16g is 04200 evo3 01470
um 14b is 01030 they all start out 49178 its the last numbers that tell you what it is i hope this helps!!!!

just take the intake off and snap a pic of the blades. doesnt have to be a great pic, we will be able to tell right away. that will at least tell you if it is some kind of 16g.
