Is my Blow off Valve ruining my Turbo?

So here's the deal...
I was showing my car (96 Eclipse GS-T, completely stock; only mod is HKS BOV) to some dood who brought a mechanic with him to inspect the car before he b
potentially ought it. He took it for a quick spin and came back. The mechanic tells me that the BOV is ruining my turbo because it's causing the turbo to spool too high to the point where it can't be cooled as fast as it should be. I forget what he said exactly, but he also said that DSM motors aren't built/designed to have the turbo vent to the atmosphere, causing the car to run rich and mess up the idle. He said, if it was vented back into the intake (with the crappy stock BOV, i'm guessing), then the life of the turbo would be higher and wouldn't be ruined. What took place was, he tried to lowball me, saying that the turbo would go out in 10k and he'd have to get it fixed and I told him to get the F out.
But, does what he say hold any merit? I was always led to believe that the BOV helps preserve the life of the turbo by venting the excess pressure. Thanks!

He is right about venting the bov, it would run rich between shifts. About the turbo spooling too high is not true. The bov has nothing to do with boost control, that would be the wastegate. And besides if its stock it would be running stock boost levels anyway. Just reroute the bov back into the intake and you'll be all set.

If your BOV is causing compressor surge it can reduce the lifespan of your turbo, does it make a flutter sound between shifts? It may be what he was trying to get at but you misunderstood him.

Vent properly or recirculate your BOV.

Okay, okay... wait a minute... I have an AEM EMS and believe my car to be properly vented to the atmosphere... however, it does flutter... You're saying that I'm shortening the lift of my turbo? Please explain this surge in detail...

Yes please explain this surge, but also please someone correct me here If I'm wrong but isn't the HKS SSQV a dual chamber bov and a push and pull type valve? Which are known to flutter at certain boost levels because only the smaller chamber opens up or they open and close at seperate times or something. If I'm wrong about this completely ignore this post because it's 3am and the sleep is much needed.

Not unless you've converted to a blow-through air sensor.

Most AEM EMS installs are using a MAP (pressure) sensor and ditch the factory MAF completely. No MAF before the turbo generally equals no issues with venting to atmosphere.

Simply venting to atmosphere will not ruin the turbo but it could cause some issues on car with a MAF (factory, GM, or otherwise) before the BOV.

recirculate your BOV and call the guy back with your original asking price. if he lowballs again, say thanks for considering my car but i believe i can get more for it.

A good trick I learned working in sales is "The Strength To Walk Away". Usually when people want something and i know i cant do it for them, i politely say sorry its not in my hands. If they keep asking and asking i again tell them sorry i cant help you and maybe you should look somewhere else where you will have more luck. By then they realize that they are getting the best deal for what they want, and they usually break down, but for the price I give them.
