I have a 95 NT and when im driving down the road it just dies on me. so i got an ecu out of another 95. it tripped the CEL but it worked just fine for about 6 months but now its doing the same thing. i took it to my mechanic to scan for the CEL and he said something about a secondary intake or something like that. has this happened to anyone? can you take an ecu out of one car and put it in another one safely? or do they have to be programmed just for that car? all replies are appreciated

i forgot to tell you that i swapped the motor thats in it from a 96... and mines a 95. i was going to put the 96 computer in but the wiring harnesses are different and it wouldnt plug in. but i can put the old ecu back in and see if the CEL goes off and if it corrects the problem. im pretty sure the CEL will go off but i dont know if it will still randomly die like it used to.

When the other computer just died did you hear any MPI relay clattering under the console ?(would indicate bad ecu) Check your mpi fuse is sitting tight. More specifics would be useful if possible.
Hope you get this fixed soon.

The secondary intake CEL is nothing to worry about. Its just that stupid little actuator that was on only 95's that had a pipe going from the dp to the stock intake box. If you still have the actuator then plug it back in and it will go away. It was just a stupid thing on the early 95's, at least my 95 has it.

The 95 nt ecu's are known to fail also with the symptoms you are describing which is random shutting off of the car.

And sniver ^^^^^ the ecu for 2gnt's is under the hood, not in the dash like the turbo models and 1g's.

yeah its under the hood so i couldnt really hear any clattering sounds. haha. where is the actuator at for that secondary intake? because id like to get that annoying CEL off. plus ill get more for it when i sell it. im trying to raise money for my tsi. thanks for the replies.

Sorry thats the second time I messed that up. I will proceed with keeping my mouth shut. Thanks for clearing that up so he wasn't confused.

Here are two pics of my engine bay showing where it should be and what it looks like.....
