Is DSMLink a piggyback?

What are the differences between a regular piggyback such as the safc and dsmlink? Not taking about features but in the way they work. Generally everyone says piggybacks suck but many love dsmlink.

Piggybacks only have the ability to intercept a signal and alter it, whereas Dsmlink is able to alter the basic tables that the ecu uses to calculate such thigs such as AFR and timing. A piggyback and Dsmlink shouldn't even be used in the same sentence.

I completely agree with you, ECMlink (DSMlink) should be another category.

But unfortunately I am going to have to say it is a piggyback system, it utilizes the stock ECU, thus piggy backing along, unlike stand alone.

Not necessarily, since you are altering the factory code, something a piggyback can't do. I wouldn't call it a piggyback, nor a standalone... It's more of a tuning solution..

I disagree. A piggyback is a separate system that works in conjunction with a factory ECU, and a standalone is a system that replaces the factory ECU. ECMlink is a system that modifies the actual factory ECU, so it actually falls somewhere in between the two. I don't have a better way to define it other than saying that it's a "modified factory ECU".

There's is no piggyback system that is capable of doing even 1/4 of what Link can do.

That's why I suggested it should be in another category.

I never said it is a stand alone, I said unlike a stand alone, but it does piggy back along, thats why I would classify it as one, before we started to come up with new terms for ECMlink, such as "tuning solution" or "modified factory ecu".

Now that we can all agree its better than a piggy back and is something totally different than a stand alone or a piggy back, I will stop using the term piggyback for link. It doesn't deserve it I live by link btw

How about "Hybrid Tuning Solution" that should cover just about most of our other misc programing as well.. All the other fun stuff like Ceddymods/ecuflash and jackel.

Hondata is similar... It allows you go above and beyond the stock ecu, but you don't have to completely replace it. Its defiantly an EMS, but its not a full standalone.

There have been people that have used DSM ECU's w/ ECMLink in their Volvo's and 240's so its basically a stand alone that just so happens to have been derivied from a DSM's ECU ;-) Lucky us
