This past weekend i went to the dyno to finally tune my car to 27psi. Very quickly we realized i had a problem. The boost would fluctuate between 19 and 25psi. We played with the boost controller, but it didnt help. After talking to the guys there we realized that the wastegate actuator was just too week. Its a 10psi actuator and i am trying to run 27. They said that generally its not recommended to go more than twice what the spring is rated for.

So once i got home i looked at Hahn's website and it looks like a new actuator cost around 120 dollars. At this point i am pissed because Hahn said that i would be able run however high i wanted with any given actuator just not any lower than its set for. So i decided to go cheap and modify what i already have.

I bought a set of carburator return springs today and measured their strength. It takes a force of approx 18 pounds to pull them to the length i needed which works out great. According to my calculations this should give me about 15-16 psi on just the wastegate. So i hook them to the flapper and to a bracket i put on the actuator.

Does this look like it would work or am i asking for uncontrollable boost?

There is only one way to find out, however that is a serious part of your setup on controlling boost. I would highly suggest getting the right wastegate for your application, however being a guy I say fire that up and lets see what it does!

Thats the same thing I did for my internal wastegate. I just used springs around the actuator and it set my boost point for the most part..

This is about the only way to mod the wastegate to allow higher boost.

Lets see what she can do!

You could have also shimmed the actuator mount with washers. This worked well on an E316g that I used for a couple days.

Great suggestion. I did this for the first intial drive making sure she got into boost. Completely forgot about that. :thumb:

YAY!! It works.. I just went try it out and my car hold 14psi on just the wastegate now compared to 8 before. I was hoping that it would be more like 16psi but i think it will work fine now to hold 27 with the boost controller.

If anyone cares, the springs I used were Holly part number 2089 from Advance Auto.

I hope it works because i called Hahns to get the price on the actuator and it now cost 188 dollars not 120 like i thought.

Is there any way to reverse this method to get the waste gate to open sooner? I have a problem with over boosting a big turbo on stock fuel so I need to turbo down the boost. Could I reverse this method to get the opposite effect?

If not, is there another way I can lower the boost level at which the waste gate opens.

Thanks,

Tom

PS: It's a V-trim turbo

Yeah you can do the opposite. All you need is a compression spring and put it on the shaft of the actuator. THere is a good write up somewhere on this forum on exactly how to do this. Just do a quick search and it should come up.

What turbo do you have exactly? IF its a HRC turbo contact me via PM because i would like to talk to you about something.

Thanks for the reply. If you're asking me what kind of turbo I have then it's a Bullseye Power T04B V-Trim.

Thanks again,

Tom

The reason i ask what kind of turbo you have is because i had looked at your profile and saw that you had a t4 turbo. I dont know if you will be able to get that big of a turbo to hold low boost steady with an internal wastegate.
