Alright well I just recently finished my custom 14b turbo kit build, and have come to realized that I really need to mod the wastegate. Which leads me to a few questions. Im told the 14b wastegate is set to run on 10psi. I searched and found two different possibilities. I can either replace the stock bring or extend the arm. I know that replacing the spring is very risky and time consuming... So I figured the easiest way would be to extend the arm. Now Ive read both gsgoinfast and xmasta19 tech articles on the subject but am still left with some confusion. Now they both wrote there tech articles on the t3, which the wastgate arm unscrews. On the 14b it is solid. So when I go to mod this... Im going to need to cut the arm in half correct? And then use a dye to put threads on each side? Now am I going to have to weld the nut on the one side so I can keep the spring in place? Im really really confused on exactly how to mount the spring which is suppose to extend the arm. Am I trying to over engineer this or is there a much simplier way to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!

no nuts are welded. only weld u need is to put the arm back together.

a simpler version of gsgoinfast's guide (LOL i have this memorized i read it so much)

holding the wastegate with the big thing on top goes like this

washer
spring
washer
nut

(now called wswn)

and that goes over the half of the rod closer to the top of the wastegate.

after the nut you need to weld the arm back together, so get close to stock

you should thread the piece you cut where you are putting the wswn and simple turning the nut, will lower or increase the arm's pressure, therefore, controlling when the wastegate opens.

Alright... so i should cut the actuator arm in half and then thread it correct? After that I place a washer, spring, washer, nut and then weld it back together. Now another question. How strong should the spring be that I put in here? What type/name brand of spring did you use? I feel like such a noob for not understanding this whole wastegate mod thing.

Ok so I was able to figure out the mod and pulled it off, but it didnt change the amount of boost the wastegate is running? Im still running the 10psi, the un modded wastegate ran? Does ANYONE have a clue on what I could do to fix this?

You need to compress the spring more which will pull the arm out of the actuator. This causes the flapper to open prematurely, resulting in lower boost.

show us pics of how you did your mod so we can verify it was done correctly before just going and adding another spring :thumb:

I was going on the assumption that he had it assembled correctly. But yes, post a pic so we can see that it is right.

Just out of curiosity, Ja17Bmx, can you compress the spring between your finger? If you can, the spring is nowhere near stiff enough.

get a new spring is right ;)

i'm still new to the turbo thing but wouldn't a boost controller work and you wouldn't have to modify the arm?

No, boost controllers can only raise boost. If your looking to lower boost, modifying your internal wastegate, or getting an external set up, is the only way to go.

let me help clarify all of this a little better

A boost controller can't lower the boost below the wastegate setting. You can use it to raise the boost higher, then also turn it back down later...not passing the preset limit of course :thumb:

I WINZ :rocks: .....my post for sticky!!!

Alright guys its been a few weeks since my wastegate issues and I thought i had it resolved, since i was only running 5 psi after the mod. But as I was driving today, the boost spiked up to 13. I know the stock 14b wastegate is suppose to run 10 psi and i dont have a boost controller hooked up right now. I have no clue what could of caused this. I looked at the wastegate and its still modded, so I know that didnt break on me. So does anyone out there have any clue what the heck is going on here?
