Intermediate shaft play

Ok so I got my transmission and engine lifted out of my 97 talon tsi, got the tranny pulled from the block. was cleaning the housing for the clutch and flywheel, looks like new again , anyways my questiion is, should there be some play in the intermediate shaft for the transfer case. the shaft is in good shape, some iodized red corrosion but nothing serious, maybe an 1/8 of an inch play back and forth. Now the input shaft in the bellhousing has no play at all its solid. ( think thats a good sign) just not to sure if both are supposed to be the same way or if play in the t-case shaft is a normal thing. Gonna start tearing down the tranny soon anyways to figure whats going on with first, dont have the cash to get someone to fix it so gonna see if i can do it myself with dre's guide. Even though thats for a FWD. hopefully there isnt much of a difference in the AWD.

It's normal for it to slide in and out a little.

Just so we're clear, we're talking about the rear output shaft right? Because the intermediate shaft is not visible unless you open the transmission case.

Ps. If you google "index of mirage manuals" you'll be able to locate a transmission factory service manual, and a transmission repair school guide for the W5M33.

ya were talking about the rear output, thats what i thought it was called then i read on another forum someone calling the shaft that hooks to the transfer case an intermediate, just being fed wrong info i guess or reading it wrong.
