I’m noticing some fluid coming from my bell housing when I look inside the rubber cover by the slave cylinder. So I’m thinking it’s a seal and don’t know which one is an input seal or an output seal. I’ve been searching and getting conflicting information.
I found this picture and was wondering if someone could tell me which seal is input and which one is output.
Also which ones requires the tranny to be taken apart to be replaced?
Thanks
Brian

In the pic you provided:

Red: input shaft seal

Purple: Output shaft seal (goes to transfer case)

Green: axle/half-shaft seal

The output shaft seal can be replaced with the trans still on the car. The end case of the trans will need removed to removed along with the transfer case.

The input shaft seal will require removal and dissambly of the trans.

Ok thank you. That’s what I thought but wanted to make sure. I guess I have a little project ahead of myself. I’m pretty sure my output seal is leaking.
Thank you for the great info!!!

Take pictures since I need to do mine too, or just drive up to the other side of NY and help me and then we'll figure it out together. I don't think it's going to be too bad of a job.. just time consuming and make sure you have a good 2 jaw puller.

Are you sure its not your rear main seal?

I'm using Brad Penn oil which is green and this fluid is definitely not green. My tcase case I'm using red line light weight which is blue and it's not blue either. So I'm pretty sure it's coming from my output shaft seal.

If you start driving now you can get here by midnight and then will have a full day to figure it out together

Here is what to expect in completing this job if you determine the output shaft is your leak:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/transmission-leaking-transfer-case-shaft.480114/#post-153511452

As far as the seal goes, I carefully ran a drywall screw into the seal. Just enough to pierce the metal in the seal. I then used a pair of pliers to pull the screw. This method worked for me and caused no damage on the sealing surface of the trans. For reference on where to have the screw, look at the inside of the new seal and you should notice it is reinforced with metal. Be very careful when doing this. My first time doing this Job took about 1.5 hours from start to finish.

Here is a visual of the screw method I used (but on the transfer case input seal):

Great info. I'm starting to feel more confident on doing this.
Thanks for the info!!

Pulled the transfer case and it looks like to me that the output seal is leaking

Got around to changing the seal this weekend and it wasnt too bad.
Removed the transfer case and the down pipe.
Removed the passenger side wheel and removed the bolts on the transmission cover.
Pryed off the cover and scraped off old liquid gasket
Removed c clip
Used two pry bars to pull off the vc and remove the ball.
Slid out the output shaft from the transfer case side.
I then used a drywall screw and screwed it into the seal like 2gmitsueclipse suggested and worked perfectly.
Installed new seal with a big socket
Replaced the output shaft with a Boostin performance one
Reinstalled ball and hammered on the vc with a rubber mallet
Installed new c clip.
Reapply mitsu liquid gasket
Reinstall cover and torque down bolts and refill tranny with new fluid

Was a lot easier than expected. The hardest part was removing and reinstalling the vc. But other than that it was pretty straight forward.
Just make sure your output shaft is in all the way and the ball is sitting in the the Groove in the output shaft. If it's sitting in correctly you shouldn't be able to pull the output shaft out once the vc is Reinstalled.

Here's a picture of the Boostin performance 300m output shaft. It's the one on the top

Glad it worked well for you. Looking at the directions make it seem more difficult than it really is.

Thank you for sharing your results. Good work!
