Tranny front output seal

Ok, so I replaced my clutch this weekend, and needed a new seal. So I got one, and installed it, but it is leaking tranny fluid. My question is, is the seal suppose to sit flush with the outside of the tranny, or is it suppose to stick out some? Or perhaps do I need to just hit it in a little bit more.

Atm it sits flat, so perhaps hit it in some more?

Ok, so I tapped it in a bit more, and its still slowly leaking. Does the seal need to be broken in? Any suggestions?

I believe it to be leaking out where the shaft goes in through the seal, as I used rtv on the outside of the seal.

What you mean how did I install it, I took the old one out, cleaned the tranny where it sat, and reinstalled the new one. Used a big socket to hammer it in evenly. And even used some copper rtv to help seal it. At first it leaked, so I hammered it in a bit more as per your advice. Now it did slow the leak, but it is still leaking.

Come to think about it, I think it's leaking out the inner part of the seal where the cv axle goes through.

Well, it seems like you damaged a seal, or your output shaft is not seated properly. I don't know what to tell you as this is a very easy task that is well detailed and outlined in other threads with thorough instructions. The output shaft seal can only go in so far as it will bottom out on the Bellhousing case flange. You could have damaged the seal upon installation. You don't use rtv silicone between the output shaft and seal. If you had a fully cleaned and degreased trans case then you could use rtv on the outer diameter of the seal. You should only use a thin coat if you do use rtv.

Where did you get the seal from? I know AZ database is all screwed up for DSMs and the ones I get from Advance only last a year or so.

Maybe it needs to get taken out, cleaned, and reinstalled. There might be a spec of dirt or something causing the poor seal.

I cleaned the outer seal, and the rtv is only on the outerside of the seal, not the inner, and the seal is from advance. This is the 2nd seal I put in, and its put in correctly. Perhaps I will try an oem.

Ok, so it seems as I found the problem. It was the POS advance auto seals that did not fit correctly. After 3 new seals, and I knew I was installing them correctly, I ordered an oem with JNZ, installed it and it is not leaking. The OEM fits much tighter on the cv axle then the advance one did. Thanks for the help, and to everyone for future references, only buy oem axle seals!
