I need a new alternator, I was wondering where most of the guys/girls on here have chosen to buy theirs from. Any good suggestions or things to stay away from..I searched but didn't find a solid answer..

Anyone have any suggestions...

Thanks in advance, cory

I know that people will go with the Saturn alternator. It's bigger so the mounting needs modified, but it's more durable and has a higher output than ours. Not to mention cheaper as well.

I would buy a new one I have seen many people cheap out and get the rebuild and they all broke

Saturn Alt for sure... cheap and easy to get and they put out 96 amps or more stock. search saturn alt swap. and there are tons of saturns at the junk yard everytime i go LOL

I went the Galant Alt route (98 Galant into 98 GST) and it worked fine. It was 90 amps.

I'd rather go with a junkyard one though than new. I get two (about $30) and it usually lasts just as well as a autopart store one. I do it because they are relatively easy to replace.

I got one at Napa. It has a 3 year warranty, more than most other parts store 1 year warranty alternators.

I have a 135amp AlterStart and it's my 3rd one in about 4 years and 35k miles. They said this is my last one and at the price I paid, it's not worth it.

I'd consider the Canadian alt with a lifetime and then coating the DP and/or shielding the alt with a metal plate. I definitely think the DP is why we see so many failures vs other turbo cars with the alts in different spots.

I'm using an autozone alternator which has a lifetime warrenty. I've gone through a few over the years. 90amp is an option for a 1990 talon. At least the last time we looked it up it was. I just take a spare when I go on a long trip :) Everyone has jumped on the saturn alternators, just that I've talked to a couple Saturn techs and they say they aren't the best. Who knows?

The Saturn alternator sounds good, is there a particular one needed? as in which Saturn donor car and any year? I am tired of replacing them every 8 or 9 months. It seems that it's just too close to the down pipe. I often thought if there was a way to take the regulator out of the alternator and remote it...like in the old days.

check out the thread in the custom fab area. has everything you need to know. I just did mine a couple of weeks ago and its by far the one of the best mods ever.

i think its any 93-99 saturn but search for the thread it has the years you need. i got mine built to 150amp unit for $140 and i brought one in but i can get em local for $150 and its a 120 amp unit... i love mine i never drop below 14 volts no matter what. headlights, fog lights, high beams, Spal fans, heater.

I just bought the Autozone one. Lifetime warranty. I'm sure I'll need the warranty but I already went through one used alternator after my original one died. Advance Auto also has a lifetime warranty and is the cheapest I found online. Autozone price matched Advanced Auto's price too. First I bought Advaced Auto's alternator but the wrong one was in the box so I went to Autozone. If you buy an alternator, make sure you bring the core with to make sure you're getting the right one.
