i just bought a talon ESi and i'm really not sure if i'm in the right place for this but i need help on some problems i'm running into when i rebuilt my motor. ok the first problem is with my horn it's not responding but it's connected and i'm getting power to my fuse bnut it's not blown i can get a small noise the first time i try to blow the horn but that's it. i need that to work before i pass an inspection. the main problem i'm having is to get the car to start. i'm still in highschool so i'm new to this. i worked all summer on my motor but then when i installed it into my car it wouldn't start. i've checked all the spark pluggs and i'm getting the right ammount of voltage to them and i also checked all of my wireing which is all in order then i checked my fuses and they are in almost perfect condition. i can't remember what the part was that i checked yesterday but it was also working fine. so tehn i pulled the intake manifold and pulled the fuel injectors, this could be the problem but i havn't had the time to get them checked. i know i probably sound like an idoit but i really could use the help. and any advice would be greatly appreciated.:thumb:

Thanks!

make sure your relays on the firewall by the drivers side are connected. make sure crank and cam sensors are plugged in. lets hope its not your timing.

first off I assume the starter is turning?
you say you are getting spark?
can you hear the fuel pump prime itself when you turn the key to on?
did you check all the terminals on the coil pack?
get us some more info on the situation and we can help you diagnose more precisely where your problem is coming from.

yeah i checked the relays that's what i forgot the name of i'm sorry that i can't give alotta info on everything but like i said i'm new to this and this is my first project. and for only being 17 i think i did ok. the timing was a worry of mine to because if it's off i have to pull the motor again. unless you know how i could work on it without having to do that. but i'm getting propor power to everything and i really know that because i shocked the heck outta my dad sunday when he was checking the spark pluggs for me. (wire wasn't connected all teh was and he leaned on it when i cranked it) but i'm turning over ut the car simply dosn't start. i sprayed ether in it and it'll almost start but it won't go all the way. my dad couldn't hear the fuel injectors poping off properly when i was trying to start it so we think it could be them because the car sat in a yard for 2 years before i went to ask about it. but i havn't gone to get them looked at like i said. i just havn't had the time now that i'm back in school. i odn't have any other problems with the car accept that the power locks don't work on it. so that's another problem arround here becuause people like to pull you're system while you are in class...so any advice on that would help too. and thanks for the ideas i know i'm not being very helpfull on telling you exactly what it is that i'm having problems on but i really appreciate the help!

Thanks again!!!

The main problem is that you've stated this is your first project.

What kind of supervision did you have?
Or did you just tackle something this big on your own for a first project?
What kind of help can you get locally? I mean to come over and look at it.

There are just so many things it could be, especially if it sat in a yard for 2 years before you even started...someone that knows what their doing might be able to check a couple of things and it just "fire up".

But 3 things are required to run an engine...air, fuel, and spark. It's one of those 3, but where, that's the question.

Make sure you're getting spark in all 4 cylinders. Make sure you're getting fuel at the rail, and then that each injector is working. It should be pretty obvious whether or not it's getting air.

i bought the car from a mechanic and he is really good friends with my dad so when ever i had a question he could come over during the summer and give me a hand. but now that the summer is over i never get home before he closes down his shop. my dad used to work in a garage. he rebuilt his camero's motor from scratch but he's not good at the car's computer work, but my gf's dad is and he gave me a heads up on what to do in that respect. plus i got the hunts complete manual for the car. so that's what i had as far as the help on the car. other than that i was on my own but all i really didn't have help with was cleaning everything out and sealing everything, replacing the oil and water pump, and the odds and ends that went allong with it. for the most part i was helped out on it.

Please clean up your grammar a little. It is very difficult to understand what you're trying to say sometimes.

The fact that you didn't have any help with the "odds and ends" makes me uneasy. Often, the bigger things are pretty hard to screw up, but it's in all the details that crucial errors can be made. For instance, did you use anaerobic sealant (not RTV) on the oil pump and bedplate seals?

I'm not trying to destroy your will. If you did everything correctly, then you have every right to be proud. I just hope you followed that manual to a "T."

I'll definitely agree that the bigger items are easy, and the real test is in the details.

It doesn't really help after the fact, but for future reference when tackling any large job such as this....

Always remember that modding a car is expensive. The faster, more reliable you want it, the more expensive it's going to be.
Plan ahead, and be realistic about it.
If you think it will cost $XX.XX, have about twice as much $$ on hand as you WILL uncover issues that you didn't plan on. That is if you want to do it correctly (if not, then what's the point?).
Bag-n-tag all fasteners, parts, etc. Mark/tape hose ends/electrical connectors as to their location.
Take detailed notes along the way.
Pictures are worth a thousand words (literally), they are extremely handy when putting things back together months later when memory fades or when you didn't have time to write it down.

At this point I would again suggest finding someone local to assist as the problem could be any number of things. And not some "Camaro" guy, or your dad (no offense) who's knowledgeable about "old school" automobiles. And definitely not your Honda "buddy". At this point it really needs to be a DSM guy that's familiar with the little nuances related to these cars and is there "first hand".

You'd be surprised what cooking on the grill and a few beers at the end of the day will "buy" you.

Have you double checked the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshafts to ensure everything's still good? Another thing it could be is bad gas(the car did sit 2yrs without starting I'm assuming), cloged fuel lines/fuel filter/pump. These are the few things I didn't see you talk about. When I rebuilt my eclipse(rebuilt from total) the car had sat for over a year and I couldn't get it to start either. I cleaned the fuel lines, drained/cleaned the tank(had to drop it, PITA), replaced the fuel pump(it was bad) and filter. Then I put it all back together double checked the timing a 3rd time, turned the ignition over and pumped the gas( I know it's fuel injected, but it did the trick) and it started shortly after. I hope this helps and I am impressed someone your age would take on a project this size and get this far, Good job!

hey sorry i havn't replyed i've been sick as mess i've got the flu...but no prob i didn't take the thing about the ols school stuff being a bust i understand that it's a new type of car and with new cars you need new mechanics. so it's cool on that respect and i checked all my seals and the only thing i did wrong was that i didn't seal the oil pan on right. so i was leaking a little oil. but other than that i checked back over everything and the only thing i could come up with was the fuel. so i pulled my intake off to get off my fuel rail and then the injectors and i still havn't had a chance to go get them checked because i've been sick like i said. but thanks for the help and i hope i can use some of it i'll let you know if it works in about a week or so...as soon as i get well enough to work on it that is...thanks again!

my first car was a 1973 nova and it was in garbage condition man but i rebuilt the motor 4 times by myself when i was 16 i know its hard thing to do but its worth it and just stick with it...... dont let anyone get into your head about this job just follow it through and u will feel like a god when you hear your car crank over and run for the first time

I don't see anyone saying he can't accomplish this task. However, it's sometimes more prudent to be realistic when tackling projects of this size. During those moments of clarity a person should become enlightened to the fact that a little help would be a good idea (the ONLY stupid question you have, is the one you DON'T ask), we all have to start somewhere.

More than likely NOW is the time to find some better suited experience so the project can be finished. There's definitely no shame in doing so and he can surly be proud of where he has brought a car that was basically sitting in the weeds for 2+ years.

hey like i said i don't think yall are trying to put me down on this i appreciate the help and i don't take it as negative feedback i wouldn't have posted anything if i didn't think you would try to help me how ever you could. and i agree that it is about time to check up on getting a mechanic to work on the car from here. but thanks on the help and no worries trust me this car is far from being finshed. once again thanks for the help and i'll let ya know how things are going in the next week or two. see ya!

I know how frustrating it can be, man. I was 15 when I got my GS leaking mass oil from who knows where. I got it from a girl and the only thing she did was hit a curb with it (silly girls). I replaced a few little things on it here and there and then jumped head first under the hood.. I was taking my first year of auto tech in high school, and all i had learned so far was brake systems, so I basically learned everything just from doing it. Months later when i got it back together and started it up everything was great, for a few seconds at least.. next thing i knew there was oil flinging from the cam gears. The guy at the machine shop pulled my oil galley plugs, and the highly trained expert at autozone gave me standard sized plugs that "looked about right". Learned my lesson there and went straight to the dealer. I turned 16 over the summer and my car is still apart in the same place from when I started. I know its hard to find time durring school, but I try to do a little everynight and every minute I can on the weekends. Hope you figure it out soon, bro.

ok i'm back in busi8ness now i'm not sick anymore...ok i have a problem with my fuel injectors. i pulled them to get em checked out to see weather or not they were clogged up and when i took them to someone to check it out he was like...i can't check them outside the car put them back in and i'll come to you're house to check it. have you ever heard anything like that and should i just go ahead and throw the old injectors away and grab a new set?

John

hey man, my horn was crappy too haha, you need to do the mod, take apart your steering wheel and clean off the pad the horn button touches with cnr electrial cleaner, you can also bend that metal bracked for a little more feel, just make your you dont lose the springs

There is no equipment currently available that will enable the technician to accurately analyze the condition of the injectors while they are on the car.

a good injector flow test and cleaning will run you about 60 bucks so you might just want to spend $149 and get you some accel 255cc. Then you can run those just fine with bolt on mods and the oem pump (you will run a little rich), and later if you decide to run some boost they can handle 9psi nicely with a walbro and an fmu.
