im completely new and need help

i have a plymouth laser rs 92 but is only fwd, is it a good idea to mod it anyways??? the motor is kinda ticking when it first starts should i just save for a new used motor, or were should i star modding??? im completely new to this any information would be great. also how do i know if my car is 1g or 2g?
 
You have a 1st generation Dsm or a "1g". I would start by reading through the tech arrivals to get familiar with your car. They can be found here: Tech Guide - DSMtuners or by clicking the tech tab in the upper left hand corner of the page. There you will find lots of info from proper maintenance to common HP upgrade paths.

The ticking is probably something called lifters, or 'lash adjusters'. They're the part between the cams and the valve rocker on the top of the engine. When they wear out, they make that ticking sound. Some people recommend using an oil additive to fix it. I just replaced mine with the newer '3g' lifters. They were about $70 for a set.

Your first step should probably be to get a factory shop manual (not a Chiltons) though, then follow up with the maint. that's necessary- like oil, filter, coolant, thermostat, rad cap, timing belt, water pump, etc. Timing belt is especially important on these cars.

Don't think about adding mods until the maint. is done- that just isn't the right way to go. Besides, the non-turbo cars are not worth the time/money to try and soup up. It's not what they're for. Get a good set of tires and a decent clutch and use your n/t for a sporty daily driver or something. If you want to go fast for relatively cheap, get the turbo version of our cars.

thanks alot to both of you, my dad is a mechanic and i do work on cars myself so me and him both really keep track of oil changes timing belts and other belts coolant and the other stuff. but om with my car being fwd and not awd will that make it alot slower or whats the difference?
 
There are plenty of fast fwd cars out there. I wouldn't let it discourage you. You could build your motor and turbo it and have fun with it for now then later on down the road buy a awd shell and swap everything over.
 
thanks thats defenetly a good option, how much power difference would i get from a fwd to a awd??? and i was looking at the maintenece but it only said for turbo models so is it the same? and were do i start to build my motor up 2 make it turbo and do i have to do it all at once or can i do it in steps and still be able to drive it?

sorry for a the newby questions but i just have no clue were to start LOL
 
You'll make the same power with an awd or fwd but, you'll find the limits of fwd traction pretty quickly
 
Take it from a fresh newbie myself, start slow. With some basic knowledge I started out doing the timing belt for the 1st time and while I was in there this forum convinced me to take out the balance shafts, then I missed a tiny detail and ended up ruining my valves, so then to remedy that I went on to replace the cylinder head, but as I was doing that I chose to replace the fuel filter and broke the fuel line in the process, so now I'm knee deep in that...

After all this I've gained a lot of knowledge (and tools) and saved a lot of money on what a mechanic would charge and have enjoyed doing it, but I still have a bunch more basic work to do on this car and learning before I start to consider upgrading/modding it. AND I only drove it maybe two weeks before broke.

I also have the non turbo which I plan on converting in the future, but to me that will be an easy fix and maybe the last thing I do to increase HP after get better familiar with the car and ways to upgrade it and open up bottlenecks like the the air filter for instance. thanks, but i actually do have the basics down ive changed timing belts tons of times and fuel filter hell ive even taken down tranmisions and done some work on them, but i just dont now how to go about changing a non turbo engine to make it making it a turbo. but as far as things that break whit wear and tear like belts pumps and all the other basic ive been doing those for a long time.i just need more details on how to convert the engine from non turbo to turbo and if i have to do it all at once or what?

The old DSM 1g lifter ticking, Live it love it learn it.
 
If you like your car i would say just swap the motor, on the other hand if your not attatched to your car like i am for instance LOL then you might find another one you like better that is already turboed. As far as putting a turbo motor in your n/t car its not hard and the wiring just comes out as a whole harness from the motor it goes into the car under the dash and plugs into the ecu... Everything is bolt in. One thing to remember if you decide to do the engine swap then make sure you pick up a transmission as well because the turbo transmission(f5m33) has a bigger bell housing and uses a bigger clutch,flywheel..;)

If I were you, I would leave it N/T for not while you familiarize yourself with it. Then after a few years of working on it, and you are completely comfortable with it, swap to turbo.
