Hello

Does anyone know if the actual housing that is on the steering column which holds the ignition key cylinder is the same for auto and manual transmission ? I know the physical cylinders are a bit different, reason I ask is I think my car (came in pieces) has a 95 key cylinder from an auto but second part of the cylinder is from a manual.

When people swap from autos to manuals and vice versa do they change anything at the ignition Or they’re compatible?

Thanks

Manual ignition key + cylinder part number: MR153677
Auto ignition key + cylinder part number: MR199826

I have couple steering columns with keys from manual 2g's

Is the housing different though along with the little tail piece that goes in behind it or housings the same and just the cylinder lengths are different.

Is there any issues using an automatic cylinder on a manual when you do a conversion?

The one circled is the manual one. It looks like all four points circled are a little different.

The center point is not only longer but is oriented differently.

Photos of the two I have. One is a a manual and the other is automatic. There is some differences for sure. I’ve taken a photo of my ignition where this slides in. I think this one I have is an automatic but the tail piece not sure if that’s automatic or from a manual (is there a difference?) the manual one is also a push in type where the auto is just a twist, top is different

Could I throw a new automatic cylinder in the car and it would work, car is manual

When I did the manual conversion to mine I left all the ignition stuff alone. I just made sure to leave the park cable pushed in so I could turn the key. It's just hiding underneath the carpet.

Where does that cable connect to on the ignition?
I'll have to check when I get home, I can snap a picture for you. Its been awhile since I did it, but I didn't swap anything that had to do with the key cylinder or anything.

How did you end up getting that small piece behind the cylinder. I had the same issues
Man, getting that thing in there was a pain. I think I had the ignition switch removed from the back side when I went to remove the lock from the front and that small piece ended up coming out with it.

If memory serves me correct, I used a long thin knife from the back side to orient a locking clip that’s in the middle (you won’t really be able to see it until you play with it with the knife). Once oriented correctly I slid the little piece from the front. Took a few tries and prayers. After that I put the switch back and then the lock like usual.

I ended up changing the ignition housing over this morning to a manual one, new key and ignition coil(white piece behind key) and I know how my dash lighting up and can turn my key as it has resistance.

It’s the first time I’m starting the car up after a rebuild so I’ve got the fuel pump relays out and the spark plugs out to prime the motor. I’ve never done a startup like this before but when I turn the key nothing happens. Is that all that’s supposed to happen with the engine prime or should I hear it trying to click?

Seems if you can’t hear the starter click like a dead battery would then power probably isn’t getting to the relay on the starter. Maybe something to do with the auto to manual swap line the car doesn’t think it’s in neutral or park, or like a clutch safety switch issue.

When you turn the key to start the small wire on the starter should be hot. You could also apply 12v directly to it and see if the starter engages. Make sure it’s in neutral though.

So I just remembered when I wired everything I did the ecm clutch bypass wire but the connector is still plugged in for the safety switch. Should that make a difference?

I did the rewire on the clutch switch tonight to the starter relay hoping that would maybe fix the issue but nothing. I don’t seem to have power at the starter relay that’s In the centre console when the key is turned on

Can anyone tell me which way this silver tail is supposed to go in. I can’t get the cylinder to sit in with it no matter how I line it up

I’ve only been able to get the key in one way and it lets me go to the lock position and acc but I can’t turn it any further the. That which means I’ve obviously got it in wrong.

I don’t think that little silver piece in the middle is in all the way.

You can’t just slide it from the front without aligning that little locking clip in the center from the backside. When it’s in all the way the lock will sit all the way in the housing. It’ll take a couple of tries.
