If you had your engine COMPLETELY dissassembled, what would you do?

It's official. As of 3:05 EST this morning, my engine ceased to exist. It was, and still is, just a pile of parts. A sight like this gives a man a great sense of accomplishment. and a semi-erection.

So now what? I've budgetted to replace the cams and cam gears, the turbo, the turbo manifold, the clutch, the flywheel, the fuel injectors, the spark plugs, all the belts and hoses, the main bearings, the rod bearings, the head studs, the main studs, the rod bolts, and, of course, all the gaskets. (I'm debating balance shaft elimination.) Aside from this list, what would you consider a MUST for anyone staring at a pile of parts? What modifications - prefferrably cheap :sneaky: - would you recommend? I know I must sound like a naive newbie, but I just feel like this is a chance with my engine I may never get again and it has infinite potential.

PS I'm not building this car for racing. I'm building it for a really fun weekend driver. So if there are mods that will decrease my top end performance, but enhance 0-6000 rpms in lower gears - let's talk.

Do you like the idea of gapless rings?

1. ALL of the timing belt components.
2. New oil pump.
3. Get rid of the balance shafts.

Take the block/head combo down to the shop of your choice and have them go through it...vat it, any machine work that needs to be done. If you don't have the knowledge or a buddy to help and access to the tools, get them to build it for you.

For just a fun car on the weekends and not the track monster, I'd save the money on the cams/gears to help pay for some of the rest with that.

Oh yea, if you think it will cost $X.xx, then add about $1K on top of that for all the misc crap that you will uncover/machine work needed along the way

higher compression pistons. 8.5:1 would be good assuming you don't mill your head any.
ARP headstuds and rodbolts for sure. you'll need a full gasket set. cams and cam gears are probably unnecessary. i'd rather spend that money on a method of tuning like dsmlink or safc or the likes. also, with larger injectors you need a way to control them, so another reason for the tuning utils. and with bigger injectors you'll want a fuel pump too.

probably best off just finding a basic rebuild kit to get the motor back together, and spend the rest on a larger turbo like a 16g or something...would be good extra umpf without breaking the bank and not crossing into race car territory :p

get rid of the balance shafts.i cant even tell mine are out, vibration wise.i went with just a stock rebuild on mine with the bs kit.only thing i wouldve changed are the pistons,to the 2g ones of course.but im overall happy with it.i went with topline bearings, stock gaskets, stock rings, and so on.

Oh baby. If I had mine apart, I would bore that sucker out. Nothing says spool like a 2.3 or a 2.4 stroker. And some good pistons. And rods. To run insane amounts of boost. Oh baby... semi erection is right.

Boring the block is not going to give you any more power, not on a 2.0 at least. Stroking is the way you increase displacement. You don't want to bore the block unless you have to because of cylinder wall taper, out of round or scoring. Also building a stroker is going to add alot to the cost of a rebuild. Sounds like he could use alot of other stuff before going to a stroker.

Hey... this is a "what would you do" thread. LOL

well iwas in the same situation a couple months ago and had a 4g63t rebuild and i put brand new pistons, rings, bearings, I had all the internals "cryotreated" for a drastic increase in durability ( if you dont know about cryotreatment look it up) I have a port n polish done, and the head shaved and resurfaced, the entire engine painted like a show car engine including tranny and the bottom block, I put all new performance cometic gaskets on, did a full custom 3 in exhaust system, larger intercooler pipes, 190 lph fuel pump, bigger fuel lines, ported o2 housing, port and matched exhaust and intake manifold ports, im debating on putting the n/t's fuel pressure regulator in because of the added pressure, and now i still need tuning devices to get it going correctly. thats what i did maybe it will help you some.

with your motor apart i would be looking to get all new gaskets, new water pump, and all new timing belt with pulleys NOW for fun things i would really be looking for a set of 1st gen con rods, the 1g big rods are significantly stronger then the 7 bolt rods keep the pistons u have now with the older rods and you will have what is known as the "poormans" built motor. these rods can often be had for under 100 $$ in the buy/sell section.

Well i would get a nice turbo but not too big, if you get too big then you wont get any early spool and wont have as much fun in town. Something a bit better than stock will be fine. Then I would get a front mount intercooler, this is always a good healthy mod for any turbo car. Make sure you have a cold air intake also of course. Then if you really to crank some power out with fun i would suggest getting some 8.5 compresson pistons and good rods to go with them. I would replace the main and rod bearings as well. Put in some HKS cams. Depending on what kind of turbo you get i would get 650 injectors, with an eprom chip put in your ecu. Also remember to buy an SAFC. You will need that to tune your fuel management. A 190 fuel pump should be sufficient for what type performance you are looking for. There are a couple of other things you can do but this should give you some ideas for now.
