What would you do if you were me

Okay So i Decied that i would go with a 1997 eagle talon tsi awd 5speed. Its got a bent rod and no first gear. So im pulling the motor and the tranny and going to redo both of them. So witch would you do?
Get a combo deal from a guy you no were the motor has 60k and the tranny has the same for with a aem wideband for 1700
Or rebuild the motor with stock oem parts in my highschool autoclass? im in no rush just want it done before summer:)
The tranny is no problem for the fact i work at a tranny shop and my boss can help me rebuild it. So what would you do? kinda need some advice what path to go down
 
$1,700 for a known good working motor and 2g AWD 5 speed trans?.. Your going to spend more then that on a "good" complete rebuild of the motor only. Buy the known good parts, and use your back stuff to learn on!
 
Talk the guy down on the motor and tranny is what I would do if your only option to rebuild is using factory parts. $1700 seems pretty steep, motors can be had for around $600 and tranny's probably around $400 used. You're really not going to gain much by going with a factory rebuilt motor.. Maybe it will last a little longer than the one you buy for $1700, but you're going to spend a lot of time, and more money on it most likely to do it properly. Is the engine already apart? There may be more damage to the engine than just a bent rod.

I'm all for rebuilds, learning how to do it is good knowledge to have, but I say if you do it, go the extra mile and buy forged rods and pistons atleast. They are more forgiveable with tuning errors and can handle more power down the road.
 
It would be cheaper to rebuild the bottom end with forged pistons and rods..Than it would be to buy a used engine and wideband for 1700..

So it would be cheaper yet to go with stock pistons and rods..Your call..

Check the vendor announcements for a deal on forged pistons and rods....
 
I was talking to my buddy black widow witch is like a dad to me, but i only want like 400 horse
if that, just a nice 16g with suporting mods, or building the motor i was thinking i want it to run this summer to bring the track so i was thinking of quick solutions. ive delt with these pmsing cars before so i already new not to just got on craigslist like last time looking for motors. This guy is Rob Fig he lives in pens. and said they got about 60k on them. he also said he would do a compression test for me before i bought the motor.
But like you guys are saying i was going to do forged but i dont want that high of horse power. But i still might do it just incase i get the urge to BOOST!:) Anyways....

hes awake LOL:). and yes i gave him the mud flaps but there not on because hes a baby and dosnt want to drill wholes LOL:) Hes my father and im sure hell lead me down the path to happy boosting as we call it :)
