The Idle is erratic for first 2 minutes and 37 seconds at start up hot or cold then after the first 2 and a half minutes it runs perfectly. This happens every time the car car is started. If i try to drive the car before the 2 and a half minutes i have no power then when the turbo comes on i get a burst of speed...

I have a New - IAC, TPS, Fuel Pressure Solinoid, MAF.

Throttle body has also been cleaned.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Thank You,

i would do a boost leak test this seams to fix many more problems than people think.
-is there any check engine light?

-when you say surges how high does it surge to and from? does it just stay high?

dood.. ive been having the same dam problem for weeks now.. tho it seems to have gotten better over time, ive done alot of things, iac is good, ive tightened all the IC pipe clamps and that seems to help a bit but.. not fixed, BISS is all the way down just to get the idle when it finally does stop surging to not be uber high.. its around 1300. i cant figure it out.. please if you figure it out pm me so i can rid my car of this horrible affliction.

Thank You,

So, you are saying it does this when you start your car no matter if it's fully warmed or completely cooled? It could be something like the o2 sensor, spark plugs or maybe even the coolant temp sensor. But, if it does this for exactly 2:37, it's kinda hard to pinpoint. Especially, if this happens during hot and cold starts. Maybe what ever the issue is causes the ecu to take 2:37 to correct and/ or override it. The hard part is finding out what that issue is.

Sometimes it's the wax in the FIAV. Perhaps swapping out the lower portion of your TB will cure this (or just installing a FIAV block plate).

I agree with checking the FIAV (For those who have a high idle or idle surge). The FIAV has a spring inside that loses it's proper tension and will not close completely after the car is completely warm. Basically, too much air passes through the throttle body and the ecu tries to compensate. Thus, idle surge or high (fast) idle.

This happens when the engine is hot or cold not air temp.

The Idle Surges from 500RPM to 0 and wants to stall until the 2 minutes and 37 seconds. After the time is up it runs perfectly at approximatly 900RPMS until i turn the key off then if i start it back up i would have to wait the 2 minutes and 37 seconds again.

Already tested for boost leak.

There was a Check engine light on for the fuel pressure solinoid, i replaced that and now there is no more codes.

I will try some of the other suggestions that were given and i will update. if anyone has anymore suggestions please let me know.

Thank you everyone for the help.

if you give the car a little rev when its surging what happens? does it run perfect while holding the gas? does it stall?

+2 im kinda leaning towards the ecu with the 2mins and 37 seconds

this issue with the 2 mins and 37 seconds no matter what temp leads me to think that it is having a hard time coming out of open loop.. it should only take a few seconds when warm.

or it could be an o2 sensor.. maby??

my old talon surged also and i messed with the fiav and iac and it eventually stopped and the idle set at 750

yes but now that i think about it highly unlikely in your case.
what happens when its surging and you give it a little gas?

What does MFI stand for? I checked my upstream o2 sensor and it doesn't seem to be getting power. The alldata software is telling me to check the MFI relay. I did some searching on it and I found out it's next to the ecu but I couldn't find what MFI stands for. Also does this sound like it could be my problem?

Could it be seaching for the front o2 sensor for the first 2 and a half minutes and when it can't find it, it just runs off the downstream sensor?

it very may could be your problem, this relay is larger in size than standard relays for most other things. i think its gold on a 95 but not sure on a 97.

MFI= multiport fuel injection

-im pretty sure your car would run without an o2 sensor in open loop before it would even get the chance to run on the downstream.

iirc the downstream is strictly for viewing that the cat is working properly.

im pretty sure your o2 sensor only "gets" power for the heater circuit.
im also pretty sure that the sensor itself generates the voltage.

My car is having the same problem after my engine build..

EVERY SINGLE TIME you turn the car on it idles rough and no power.. until turbo spools and even sometimes itll just cut off and pop..

But exactly 2 minutes and 30 seconds every time you turn the car on no matter how hot or cold it is..

ANYONE FIGURE OUT THIS PROBLEM? pleasee post back
