I was ironically driving my dad to autozone so he could get something for his truck, when I noticed that my exhaust sounded like it was non existant, come to find out the nuts on the studs from the turbo/manifold all came loose and fell off. Well, on our way home I look in my rear view mirror and there is a monsterous cloud of white smoke behind me, I stop to inspect and I could see it coming from the turbo/manifold area that was no longer bolted together, and out the back of my exhaust.

I went and showed my mechanic and he suggested that its likely my turbo is toast. I know there are probably other possibilities, and I would like to hear your suggestions, but I would also like to note that over this past summer I had my head rebuilt, all new gaskets, and it has been in the shop for the better part of most of 2011 LOL.

So, if it turns out the little t25 is done, I have a 16g I bought forever ago sitting in my room, however the only supporting mods I have managed to get between constant repairs are fuel pump, boost gauge and boost controller. I am assuming I cant/shouldn't go with the 16g? Or would it be alright if boost was kept low until I get the rest of the supporting mods? Im asking because I am a broke college student and don't have a lot of $$$. Could I find a replacement t25 for cheap? Or what about a 14b? Would that bolt up or would there be modifications with that as well?

Thanks

You need a install kit to put the 16g on, the lines are different. I would go with the 16g and waste gate pressure before I bought a new (different turbo). You have the right attitude to the situation, but the 16g will be fine.

I would asses costs here.$100 for a t-25 bolt on, to get nowhere (and spend the $200 eventually anyways.), or $200 to make progress, and eliminate one more thing you'll have to buy down the road.

I ran my B16G for a while on my SMIC and no fuel mods but my 255 fuel pump. I just kept it at 15psi and didn't really get on it hardly ever. I'd go with the install of the 16g and buy an install kit so you know you have everything at once.

I'm always reading threads like this and seeing "I'm a broke College student" somewhere in the O.P.'s text. You guys need to realize you are driving the wrong car for such a financial situation. LOL

Agreed, especially if you're modding it.

Yes you can use the 16g at stock psi somewhere in the range of 8-10. I believe the wastegate is set at 8 psi. The only downside is that you have a bit more turbo lag.

Its not that they don't have money, its just that... the need it for boookss, I mean beer.:shhh:

My car leaves me broke often even with a job and a house and all. Things get pricey quick when you slip up and stomp down..;)

I didn't know back when I bought the car that it was going to be a money pit, LOL. I also wouldn't say it was a money pit to begin with, it was fine until I moved to Vegas and back using the car as transportation for both trips that it started its downward spiral. Can't resist modding it either, I enjoy it and I love the car regardless of how much of a pain in my ass it is to keep it running.

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback, its appreciated guys. I have a picture here, I was doing some poking around under the hood when I got home today, I am not exactly sure how the inner workings of these go, but I am assuming the oil in there shouldn't be there? Was trying to make sure it is in fact a bad turbo before I go purchasing anything.

Check the turbo for in and out, and side to side play. Should be virtually no in and out, and only very slight side to side. Make sure it spins smoothly.

If it checks out ok there, all you can do reattach it, and try it. The oil could be from the turbo, but if this is a stock car, then chanches are its oil from the valve cover that blows by into the intake, between the maf and turbo. That accordian looking one.

Wow you have a mechanic? I thought these cars were rolling tech schools. Im still confused how the bolts holding your t25 on came loose? i know when I swapped the one on my old 97 I thought the little f'ers were gonna snap.

You don't need a full install kit to put the 16g on. All you really need is just a j pipe. The rest of the parts will work. I would suggest getting an AN drain line however.

The An will save some headache how ever set you back, a gasket, piece of masking tape (to keep the filings outta the tube) and a rotary file makes short short work. After that I usually take a flat file over the flange surface to flatten it back out.
