I was wondering what a good way to get my car into the mid-12 second range (hoping for low 12's), as in what turbo, intercooler, and other supporting mods would be required. My father knows someone who knows his stuff with tuning, so I'm all set there.

If you havent handled a car that runs 12's yet than dont be so antsy to get one, go test drive a GTI and than decrease the 0-60 by 2-3 seconds...going from a daily driver to a 12 second race car is hard to do and alot of people dont know what to do with it besides make the car related to a telephone pole... just my opinion

the best way to get used to being able to handle a 12 second car is practice. how do you practice?.. you drive it around. but how do you drive it all the time w/o owning it?

p.s. 12 seconds isnt a race car ;)

So I've heard one person say that a 16g can be put well into the 12's, and another said that it could not. How hard is it to do so (if possible)? If a 16g can't do it then looks like I'll be in the market for a 50-trim.

I'm no DSM expert (yet.. but getting there out of neccessity :( ), but any statement like "Turbo xxx {can or can't} put you in the 12's, 11's, etc." just sounds ridiculous. There are SO many variables such as tune, weight, mods, driver skill, planet alignment, etc....

My money says that there are people that could probably get a 16G into the 11's or faster all day long, and others that couldn't get a $4000 custom built turbo to break 15's if their life depended on it.

Just my .02 ;)

So with that said, anyone have suggestions on what turbo setup I should go with? ROFL

its possible to touch 12's on a s16g fairly easily. but the goal you stated of potentially low 12's, thats gonna be a bit harder. for a low 12 second car...go with something bigger

then again, you have to take into consideration what dyno the numbers are coming from. inertia rollers will always show inflated numbers. in the case of the dynapack, already the numbers will be inflated due to being attached straight to the hubs. dynojet, its just a huge roller. id like to see someone push 400 on a mustang dyno. shit, its a pain to get that thing to 300whp on a stock block on a loaded dyno like the mustang or a dyno dynamics.

tell me, what are the rest of the mods on that 400whp slowboy car? what kinda boost levels etc. race gas? etc. a 400whp on a loaded dyno, e16g running pump gas and a stock block...HA...good luck

You may be correct but the evo 3 16g can make 400 whp , in which case you said that it couldnt be done unless your sbr, which of course is untrue.
And you couldnt possibly argue with the fact the the evo 3 16g is easy to get into the 12's could you? i said it was capable of making 400whp i didnt say the original poster was going to make or come close to scratching that mark in any way but i DID say it will be a good turbo for the goals he has in mind ( he needs 12's ).

im saying it all depends on the build and the dyno too. you're not gonna make 400whp on a mustang dyno with a e16g without a built motor and race gas imo.

the e16 is easy to get into the 12's. i'll agree with that.

start with the basic maintenance, change all your fluids- trans, motor, brake, coolant, ect then do a timing belt if it has not been changed in a while. These cars are not mod friendly unless they have been taken care of

Here is what i have and was able to do.

Stock 7bolt.
SBR FMIC
Ported exhaust housing
ported 2.5" O2 housing
EVO16g
3" cat deleted exhaust
255hp FP W/ AFPR
Manual BC
DSMLink
780cc INJ
ACT 2600 W/ Lightweight FW
Replaced shifter bushings and shifter mount bushings (often over looked when answering your question, but a very good and important mod)
short shifter
Also at the track, remove the passenger head light, our cars LOVE IT.

This setup neted me 12.6 on pump and 12.3 on race.

im sure their are a few other things, but you can take your stock 2g MAF well into the 11s
and so you know, people have taken the 14b into the 11s, possibly even 10s, not 100% about that. Not saying that a 14b is the best way to go with your goal, but saying a small16g will only do this is paritally miss-leading.
