The reason you are getting greif from everyone is more then likly because you post a thread " I GIVE UP ON DSM " , On a DSM SPECIFIC website. You can't tell people to stop being rude, and expect them to top. This is the interenet.

These cars are unreliable pieces of shit because of all the young teenage kids who buy them, Then run to home-depot and lowes, For ''performance mods''. More then likly, Alot of them from this very forum. Sadly for buyers like you, Who then end up with their neglected piece of garbage. Fortunate enough for me, Because I buy them neglected, rebuild them, Sell them, And then buy them back in 2 months when the new owner neglects them and blows them up again. (Repeat that process, Forever).

With that being said:

I just picked up my first one (93 GS) from a repo yard for $600. I put it right in the shop to get all the kinks hammered out before I sell my financed vehicle and use the DSM as my daily driving college car.

So far...

Head Gasket, bolts, and all other gaskets $220
Timing Belt kit $100
New rebuilt head (worth the money if you can do it) $550
Water pump and other drive belts $100
Spark plugs, thermostat, fluids, filters, misc. little stuff $100
Labor $330
Electrical problems, previous owner wired fans to run continuously to cool engine from a cracked head $???
Radiator fans squeaking. Still haven't heard back from mechanic on how to resolve.

So yeah, I'm in probably over $1500 and haven't even gotten to drive it yet. It's been in the shop for over a month. But I figure get all the repairs out of the way now and it'll probably treat me well for a long time. I bought an NT SOHC intentionally because I need a daily driver and hopefully it'll be less expensive to repair. I get the benefit of a cool looking car plus the reliability of not having unnecessary muscle. $600+$1500=$2100 for a reliable car that isn't an embarassment to drive. I'm satisfied.

....and a partridge in a pear tree.

J/K. Really though, older cars can get finicky, and temperamental. Mine is almost 18 years old, and I'm having to replace the some clutch pack or another (it an A/T) every 6-12 months along with the usual high mileage maint (i.e. belts, plugs, wires, tubes, lines, and fluids.) Most times it's just stuff that can happen over time, and needs to be fixed as it comes up. DSM's are great platforms, and despite their reputation as being maintenance intensive, they really aren't any worse off that any other 10-20 year old car.

Whoah never seen that happen to a manifold.....LOL

Lolyeah the kid who started this post is probally 15. This ain't a Honda bro. No vtech here buddy this is a real car that needs to be worked on forever n ever n ever

LOL i bet i have u all beat....i trade my 02 yamaha R6 that was modded for a 97 tsi awd, 2 giant rust spots on the strut towers, one with a hole so big u could put your fist through it, the same day the battery dies so i have to push start it while my wife jumps it,(which until now she's hated the car), one rim has so much curb check on it its like a ticked off teenager drove it, the underbody had so much rust under it i was scared to drive it, thinking i was going to fall through the floor board, the t-25 was blowing out white smoke, my antilock brake system went out one random day while driving with my daughter in the car(scary), broken front axle, starter went out, major crack in ic piping, foul plug wires, missing bolts on rear strut towers i didnt know about, rust on hatch, rusty holes on exhaust pipe, headlight mounts rusted out and broke off, speedo didnt work, cd player had no face plate,LOL, all is fixed now and i enjoy it so much, my wife loves the car and will never let me sell it.

hey man if you dont want to put the time or effort into dont have one, its not called dsm for nothing, dsm stands for driver slash mechanic LOL

Absolutely. The more that goes wrong with my car, the more I learn! I'm noticing how most people around me don't know much about the cars they drive and don't want to. The reason I get mad when a car breaks is because I expect it to be "reliable". This is ignorance because such a term as reliability depends 100% on the care put in...whether you're talking about cars or anything else in life. For some it's mere transportation, to others it's about status. I'm not saying I can't understand such motives but I personally need a project to keep me busy. Life's routines get boring and cars offer many skill sets to develop. Most importantly I love the 4G63's power!
