why is it i've seen a few 4g63 engines with hyundai spark plug covers.. there was a valve cover on ebay with a hyundai badge on the spark plug cover, and a 4g63 engine for sale on ebay now that says in the description "some came with hyundai valve covers..." what is this about?

It's the same friggin valve cover as the one on EVERY 4G63. Just order gaskets for any of the following valve covers.

90-94 Turbo AWD
90-94 Turbo FWD
90-94 N/T 2.0L
95-99 Turbo FWD
95-99 Turbo AWD

Hopefully you can find some model in that line up that will fit your fancy and just order a gasket for it.

Here is a really crazy idea, take the gasket from your EXISTING valve cover and put it into the Hyundai on and install it. It doesn't matter what friggin lettering is on the outside, it's EXACTLY the same.

Yeah, most hyundai motor parts (and other parts too) will interchange with mitsubishi parts directly because hyundai uses mitsubishi designs for all their stuff. They change very little in the castings. Mostly just that little crooked H. And for whoever called a hyundai a sleeper- drive one, you will change your mind. I recently drove a 99 elantra, it was TURD!

I know it would have helped if I had payed attention when I got it at a junkyard, however I thought the mitsu gasket would just work with it so I didn't care.
If you're really oiling that turbo off the OP from your head, the valve cover gasket will be the least of your problems.

EDIT>>> Who makes that exhaust manifold man, looks nice!

Maybe you should read a few of the posts in this thread and rethink your comments? READING is your friend. The gaskets are NOT the same for the black one that I'm referring too because I want to use the studs.

That isn't even my engine bay in the pic I just posted that pic to show the valve cover. I'm not oiling my turbo from the head. Some turbos need to be oiled from the head though so I suppose it could be a problem, but considering it's one of AMS' cars in the pic I'm sure they're doing it just fine. :thumb:

Don't use the studs, just use your regular bolts. Both of those valve covers use the same friggin gasket. Look at them. They are the same valve cover with minor cosmetic changes. Pull your valve cover off and take out the gasket and put it in the new manifold It will work fine..

I put the same valve cover on my eclipse and all that was needed was longer bolts. That cover is a little taller than the stock one.

Would it be possible to enlarge the holes in the gasket so that you could use the studs?

NM that last thought.....I just re-read the post :thumb:

If it were me, I would just use bolts. It worked fine for me.

You could always call a hyundai dealer and ask for a 90-94 1.8 Sonata gasket.

If it doesnt fit you can always return it.

Good Luck.

My reasoning for wanting to use the studs is because my bolt holes in the head are starting to strip so I don't want to keep screwing and unscrewing the bolts ... a stud is the easiest fix. I don't want to spend the time and money to build up another head and swap it on or to start drilling and retapping this one. I know they are the same valve cover, but like I said before the holes are a much larger diameter for the studs so the gasket holes need to be enlarged as well which I don't want to do and it should be replaced anyways. The valve cover is off ...

DSMFanatic had a good post. Try enlarging the hole in the gasket for the bolt, you can easily do that with a drill by hand (as in not in the chuck of a drill just in your hand and twirling it back and forth through the hole to enlargen it) and using some RTV gasket maker around it then re-install.

Even with studs there is a chance they can back out of the head though, so if you want to keep them in there, make sure you put some blue lock tite on the threads to they don't crack loose. Red locktite might be too much for a small stud like that you'll never get it out. You should also only tighten down the valve cover hand tight, as in so loose it feels like the bolts will back off and fall out.

I'm going to try and enlarge the holes in my stock gasket but I just figured you shouldn't reuse the gaskets anyways so I may as well go out and buy the correct one and call it a day. I may just try and enlarge the holes and see if it leaks first.

You can re-use the gasket ok. Just put rtv on both sides when installing it. Into the valve cover first then on the bottom. Put extra on the sharp corners for sealing like stock, and just a thin coat on the flat surfaces. it will be fine.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but I just picked up a Hyundai valve cover from my junkyard and didnt grab the studs. How much longer of a bolt would I need? I tried a 30mm bolt(stock were 25mm) and it didnt grab the threads. That was the biggest the auto parts store had. Is there a place other then the Hyundai dealer to get the studs? Heres a pic for reference:

Not bad for $15

Ok, made a trip to the hardware store and to my surprise they carried metric SS allen key bolts! I had a set of the SS allen bolts I bought off eBay for my old cover and they worked/looked great. So I snagged some 35mm long bolts and they work great. Only cost me $6 for 8 bolts and some washers :thumb:

i just recently acquired this valve cover too.. but when i put it on, my 2g outer bolts are too short and will not thread into the head. DSMfanatiic which bolts did you use? i was thinking of getting some 1g bolts at the junk yard. but haven't had a chance, hmm.... wonder if they are equal legnth or longer than the 2g.

I ended up using the all black Hyundai "16 Valve" cover & stud setup in my talon... I actually like the whole stud idea. -Less leak potential IMO- It does have some clearance issues if you use the studs... They don't allow the valve cover to clear the cam gears when R&Ring the valve cover. I took the 4 studs that are closer to #1 and ground them down about 2-3mm (just above the start of the threads).

The valve cover I got came off of a 95 Hyundai Elantra 1.6L DOHC. If you order a valve cover gasket for this application, it will have the enlarged holes for the larger diameter studs. Other then that, the sparkplug tube seals & half crescent plug from the 4g63's valve cover are interchangeable.

One last thing if you are using the studs... Hyundai uses a sealing washer (a rubber coated washer) to aid in sealing the top of the stud once through the mounted valve cover. -New replacements for these can be found at your local OSH store's hardware section.

Yah that was the only thing I didnt like about the studs. Cant remove the cover completely unless you removed one of the studs closest to the cam gears. Didnt think to grind one down. I like the idea of the studs as well, Im going to try to get a set along with the Elantra gasket.

I found that by grinding down all of the studs on the #1 side of the motor, you will have no clearance issues what so ever... I tried just one at first, but it was still kind of a pain to get it to fit. -I ground down all of them on that side and it was no longer an issue.

As for getting them with the gasket, I didn't have any luck finding a complete set... I got the valve cover gasket (VC gasket, Half crescent, and tube seals) set and had to go back to the wrecking yard for the studs & nuts. You can get the VC gasket set just about anywhere... The studs are a dealer item only and I found (on some Honda valve covers) a 10mm crown nut that also works perfectly for these valve covers.

Well cool! Are you using the little "washers" that came attached to the valve cover as well? Or did you wind up taking them off like i did?

I just used aluminum washers on mine that were thick enough to keep the nuts from bottoming out on the studs. Just to clarify, only the 2 outer studs cause any clearance issues. The inner ones inside the spark plug well can be left alone.

For anyone that's interested in the hardware and didn't get them when you got your 95 Hyundai Elantra valve cover. I got the part numbers for them from a Hyundai dealership. Also, note that this was referrenced to 94 Elantras with build dates after July of 94, which were just called 95s and the one at the top are the ones for builds before July of 94.

So to sum it up and for future referrence.
1995 Hyundai Elantra with the 1.8L motor.

I realize this is an old thread, but it helped me when searching for this info and I hope my addition serves the same in helping someone else.

I was gonna add but saw this post. Yes. Basically 94-95 Hyundai Elantra GLS. They are the only ones that came with the 1.8L DOHC (4G67) although that really started from 92. So if you don't find a 94 or 95, try the 92-94's as well. Both VC for the 1.8Ls and 1.6's (non-GLS models) should be the same since they share parts. Only difference on those cars is the stroke and bore. Most other "external" parts will interchange. Hope that helps. :thumb:

Also...when using that VC, buy the hardware and VC/spark plug hole gasket for that car. They are a little different (little thicker/wider) than those for a DSM.
