For a 1G:

OK, so I have searched, and saw 2 different ways of testing a TPS, but not sure which way to do it, off of the car and whth the 2 screws not on it.

There's this page, where it's off the car, but he has the 2 screw on it (actually an adjustment FAQ):
http://www.plymouthlaser.com/tps.htm

Then there is this page, is that for when it's on the car?
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/7678/dsmtests.html

I bought a used TPS, wanna make sure it's good before I replace the bad one on my car.

Thanks! :rocks:

Thats the only way i know how to test it. Since yours is bad why not pull it off and set the new one up. You wont end up behind at all, besides a few minutes maybe.

Well if this one i bought isn't good then I would have taken off the throttle body for nothin, cause I can still drive the car the way it is, just doesn't drive as good.

I don't understand why the 2 screws have to be on that "thing" for me to test it.

The other question, is, does it matter? Should the test results be the same regardless? If so, then this one is not good.

That's another reason I need to know, cause I tested it it the way it is, and the results were not consistant with what would be "good".

If you look at the TPS you'll see that you can turn it by hand.
The tests are to first make sure that the total resistance falls in specifications and the second test it to make sure that the resistance changes consistantly without spikes or dropouts as you turn it.

Based on my experence a TPS can pass both and still fail once it gets hot and it get pretty hot under the hood. So you can do a quick pass/fail test out of the car but you can get false passes on a TPS that fails when hot.

Charles Monk has a lot of good information on his plymothlaser site but the TPS VFAQ isn't one of his best.

Without measuring the total resistance and actual +5 sensor voltage you can't set the TPS my resistance. You have to make the final setting on the car. The factory have a break out harness for getting at the signals once the connector in plugged in, We have to probe the pins/wire at the TPS, check it at the ECU pins, or use the output of a SAFC or datalogger to get the factory setting of about 0.5v at idle or 10% on a datalogger.
