how to test a MT when is off the car

Hey guys I have a 23 spline MT I am going to buy a T case for it but I am not sure if this MT works or if it doesn't I just don't want to waste my money on buying the 23 spline T case for this thing to not work is there anything I can do while the tranny is out to kind of give me an idea that it works? or if the viscous LS is in good shape

Aside from pulling it apart and inspecting the syncros ect. you could try turning the trans by hand and shifting through the gears by manually pulling the shift linkages.

Personally I would crack it open and inspect what you can see; they're pretty simple, and it would be peace-of-mind to know there aren't any gear/synchro pieces floating around in there. Just my $0.02

There are no checks you can do from the outside except maybe check input shaft end play. If you can move the input shaft axially any amount you can easily feel the trans needs some work.

Ive heard of people spinning the input shaft with a drill and shifting through the gears to make sure nothing is completely busted inside
